About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Biosafety Quality Management Specialist to join our team to support our Federal Government customer. The successful candidate will provide support involving a combination of management scientific and regulatory responsibilities including laboratory safety compliance in relation to quality management. The Biosafety Specialist will use prior laboratory experience to contribute to biosafety practices and understanding.
This is hybrid remote position that will require some onsite work at our customers location in Atlanta Georgia.
Responsibilities
- Developing implementing and updating safety plans to include biological containment decontamination and waste removal.
- Managing the entire life cycle of biohazardous chemical and other hazardous waste including coordination with related vendors.
- Creating and delivering training materials on biosafety principles BSL-specific practices and agent-specific hazards for laboratory staff including biological agent information.
- Tracking and documenting the movement of biological specimens ensuring a transparent chain of custody proper labeling and compliance with all regulations.
- Monitoring documenting and reporting safety compliance issues and incidents as well as investigating and analyzing accidents and/or incidents identifying corrective actions and reporting results.
- Providing technical assistance in the creation of risk assessments.
- Monitoring and maintaining laboratory equipment such as BSCs autoclaves and decontamination systems to ensure proper functioning following established addition recognizing malfunctions of laboratory equipment taking/making corrective action plans as needed.
- Inspecting safety-related equipment such as fire extinguishers first aid kits AED Units etc.
- Conducting and/or assisting with occupational safety and health audits.
- Developing written standards and controls according to prescribed procedures.
- Maintaining inventory of lab instruments and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) according to
- recognized guidelines. Ensuring all personnel receive safety training especially those related to biosafety and laboratory practice and that they remain in good standing as required for the role.
- Ensuring proper selection and fit of PPE.
- Serving as primary point of contact with client safety managers regarding all biosafety and biosecurity matters.
- Preparing and communicating reports on activities and efficiencies.
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum 5 years of laboratory biosafety experience.
- Must be highly motivated and able to work independently.
- Utilize correct laboratory processes.
- Remain up to date on new laboratory processes and procedures and must have the ability to understand interpret and convey technical information regarding laboratory specimen preparations and ensure accurate and timely end work product.
- Ability to multi-task with a strong attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work under routine and stressful conditions in an accurate and timely manner.
- Ability to consistently achieve daily/weekly/monthly activity goals.
- Must be able to meet high quality standards follow regulations and maintain confidentiality.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills and ability to analyze issues and articulate appropriate solutions to management.
- Familiarity with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Job Safety and Health Its The Law! poster expanding the lists of employee rights and employer responsibilities as well as providing additional information about training and injury reporting requirements.
- Training and/or working experience with quality management quality assurance quality audit CAPA LSRB OLSS and CLIA compliance is preferred.
- Experience in triaging feedback complaints non-conforming events CAPA and/or document control systems ensuring compliance to established procedures.
- Experience in generating statistical tracking and trending reports to monitor compliance with established quality & safety systems requirements and identify areas of improvement.
- Experience working in a public health setting ideally supporting the federal government preferred.
- Ability to obtain a government clearance.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship now or at any time in the future.
Education and Training
- Bachelors degree in Microbiology Biology or other related life sciences required (Masters degree preferred).
- Membership in a professional biosafety organization is desirable.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to obtain necessary immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to laboratory placement including Hepatitis B among others.
- Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing may be required.
- Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents.
- Must be physically capable of performing repetitive motions such as pipetting and operating cell counters
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift 25 pounds regularly.
- May be exposed to hazardous materials and must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against exposure to pathogens and chemicals.
