Vanderbilt University employs part-time permanent employees - Admissions Specialist to support the review and evaluation of the applications received in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA) for each reading cycle. Admission Specialist play an important role in the review and evaluation process of first-year and transfer students and support the overall goals of both OUA and VU.
About the Work Unit
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Vanderbilt University is a critical unit within University Enrollment Affairs (UEA). Its mission is to recruit select and enroll a diverse cohort of degree-seeking first-year and transfer students who are intellectually curious academically talented and socially engaged. The Office consists of a team that includes the Director an experienced group of admissions officers and a well-seasoned support staff engaged in marketing Vanderbilt globally. To accomplish this members of the OUA team travel both domestically and abroad to conduct high school visits attend college fairs and do speaking engagements. The Office communicates systematically with hundreds of thousands of prospective students through traditional printed publications the web and other social media channels and serves as the first point of contact for members of the public interested in VU.
Expectations
- Attend 4 day in person reader training in October of every year
- Work 20-29 hours from October 15- March 30 bluesheeting and evaluating first year and transfers
- Attend weekly meetings
- Maintain confidentiality
Responsibilities
- Fully evaluate all components of a first- year application to Vanderbilt University- from initial intake to final assessment.
- Becomes in expert in 3-4 domestic territories and 1-2 international territories
o Understand transcripts from these territories (including typical class rank practices grading trends class titling)
o Understand typical extracurricular offerings research opportunities and regional awards titles from your geographic location
- Understand file volume and deadlines throughout the season adjusting work priorities as needed
- Read and understand manuals for blue sheeting and assessment and evaluation of first year applicants
- Maintain communication with Admissions Officers of your assigned geographic territories. Communicate frequently about:
o File volume
o Trends
o File corrections
- Conduct paired reading evaluations with Admissions Officers from your geographic territories
Education and Certifications:
- A bachelors degree from an accredited institution of higher education or an equivalent combination of education relevant military experience and relevant skills is required.
Experience and Skills:
- At least two years experience working in an education setting is required. (High School or higher education preferred)
- Ability to work independently and meet strict stated deadlines is necessary.
- Competence and comfort with entering data into web-based forms and a solid knowledge of technology with ability to work independently using that technology is necessary.
- Strong analytical and data analysis skills are necessary.
- Strong basic math skills are necessary.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel is preferred.
- Ability to understand and maintain strict confidentiality of admissions process and application data.
- Must be able to use a private home office to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate within a team.
- Ability to manage time constraints and reading goals set by management team.
- Access to high-speed internet connection is required.
