The Therapy Education Coordinator provides development expertise for licensed and unlicensed rehabilitation staff by functioning as an educator consultant facilitator change agent and leader. The educator supports the development of the rehabilitation staff and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence through the delivery of evidence-based Rehabilitative interventions. The educator is an integral member of the programs leadership team.
The Therapy Education Coordinators experience a unique opportunity to employ their clinical experience in patient care practices collaborating with healthcare professionals and advocating for the well-being of patients. Therapy Education Coordinators play a vital role to support patient & family/caregiver learning as well as external community education.
This role collaborates with therapy and patient care teams to assess initial and ongoing learning needs plan and implement learning courses/lessons/assignments/testing to meet and track identified needs providing education that helps drive the growth of therapy operations in an effort to improve patient care quality.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures the highest quality of patient care service and satisfaction through the initial and continuing education of new and existing therapy employees.
- Orientation: Assesses the quality effectiveness and appropriateness of orientation and continuing education materials on an ongoing basis; works collectively with clinical educators to develop and implement a standardized orientation program for therapy staff.
- Competencies: Designs process to assess and develop competencies to equip the learner with the knowledge skills and attitudes needed to function in the rehabilitation setting.
- Staff development:
- Assists the learner to apply theory to practice and to maintain and enhance competency.
- Performs an annual needs assessment for learners and the identification of outcomes.
- Develops/coordinates education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation.
- Continuing education: Designs opportunities that enhance the practice of inpatient and/ or post-acute rehabilitation; assists the learner to comply with licensure and certification requirements.
- In-service education: Designs programs to increase competence in a specific area of practice such as training in the use of new equipment and review of policies procedures and protocols that are required for the learner to function within a specified setting.
- Patient education: Organizes patient education activities instructs learners as to educational strategies and/or assists in the development of patient education materials.
- Contributes to the development of the departments and/or an organizations philosophy purpose and goals.
- Offers an educational perspective in all endeavors that affect therapy staff practice and patient care outcomes.
- Identifies changes that should be made in therapy staff practice using an evidence-based approach and facilitating the initiation of adoption of and adaptation to change.
- Acts as a consultant assists with the integration of new learning into therapy practice; assists therapists in identifying available internal and external educational resources for professional development in the care and treatment of patients throughout the continuum.
- Collaborates with rehabilitation experts to design educational offerings and learning experiences based on adult learning principles current theory and standards of practice for therapy staff.
- Provides an appropriate climate for learning and facilitates the adult learning process by developing planning and presenting educational activities and directly or indirectly fostering the development of competence in the therapy staff.
- Collaborates with interdepartmental supervisory staff and education staff to facilitate the development of standards of care policies and procedures competency of therapy staff and performance improvement to ensure quality patient care.
- Collaborates with nursing to improve interdisciplinary clinical practice and safety standards.
- Collaborates with Quality Outcomes Management Department to ensure compliance of therapy with accreditation requirements.
- Identifies educational resources upon request for professional and non-professional organizations in the community.
- Promotes and participates in the development of research presentations conferences and publications for Shepherd Centers rehabilitative programs; supports staff in these activities as identified.
- Represents Shepherd Center in the professional community as a clinical expert.
- Contributes to the development professional accreditation and presentation of Professional CEU education in conjunction with Alliance Education.
- Facilitates/Participates in the development and monitoring of patient and family education programming; (printed materials classroom offerings online community platforms).
- Performs consistent with Shepherd Center standards clinical policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required/requested/assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION
- Degree of certificate/diploma from accredited program in allied health field for PT OT or SLP.
REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION
- Current BCLS Certification required.
- Active Georgia license - Occupational Therapy Physical Therapy or Speech-Language Pathology license
REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 3-5 years clinical rehabilitation experience.
- Experience in teaching providing educational opportunities mentorship and/or leadership. Experience in the area of brain injury spinal cord injury and/or other neuromuscular disorders preferred.
REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS
- Basic computer skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters degree in education or related field preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Clinical use of self and/ or adaptive devices/ DME is required to safely effectively and efficiently mobilize patients. Clinical judgement is utilized to determine appropriate positioning & adaptive devices as needed. Ability to transfer and position patients consistent with lifting up to 50 lbs.
