The candidate would be a member of the SEIUs Organizing Capacity Center team. The SEIU Organizing Capacity Center is a group of programs striving to create collaborative learning spaces across our union that build a capable and skillful organizing community. The programs develop organizers and campaigners to build power for all working people by engaging in campaigns that center racial justice and focus on the most important social and economic issues facing workers their families and their communities.
Purpose:TheOrganizing CapacityCoordinatoris responsible for the developmentexecutionand coordination oftrainings training programs and other learning opportunities designed to enhance organizing campaignerand leadership skills of union organizers within the SEIU International Union and our affiliated local unions.
Thecandidate must have significant experience regularly designing coordinating and facilitating in-person and virtual trainings for organizers and campaigners with varied levels of experience.
Thecandidatemust have significant years of relevant experience in organizing campaign planning and campaign team management and be able to assess the skills and practices needed for the development of beginner to coordinator-level organizers. They must also have experience designing coordinating and facilitating in-person and virtual trainings for organizers and campaigners with varied levels of experience.
Primary Responsibilities:TheOrganizing Capacity Coordinatorwill be responsible for:
- Developing & facilitating trainings and learning spaces for varying levels of union organizers that enhance organizing campaigner and leadership skills - in line with with new organizing campaign goals and strategies and SEIUs overall goals;
- Creating and writing relevant and effective training materials including curricula hand-outs interactive exercises and presentation.
- Learning and utilizing creative training techniques that can be adapted to teach concepts skills and best practices of union organizing and staff development to different audiences;
- Facilitating and providing feedback in large and small group training discussions exercises and practice labs to support trainees development and enhance their understanding of and ability to utilizetraining information and materials in the classroom and field;
- Work in collaboration with others to apply diversity equity and inclusion principles and best practices particularly applying a racial justice lens to the work;
- Work in coordination with SEIU managers and/or Local Union leadership to evaluate specific staff development needs and provide support through training and other identified components.
- Providing leadership in upholding SEIUs overall staff development and organizing standards;
- Conducting new hire trainings and orientations to acquaint new organizing staff to the SEIU and its policies and procedures
- Assisting in therecruitment screening and assessment oforganizer candidates;conducting phone and in-person interviews; facilitating group candidate screenings; and assisting with hiring recommendations to SEIU locals and IU Divisions;
- Assisting in oversight of SEIU Organizers-in-Training(OITs)and coordinating with appropriate field/campaign managers to ensure each OIT is receiving appropriate training and feedback and reviews are completed in accordance with relevant SEIU CBA;
- Working closely with the Capacity operations team to ensure training logistical requirements and needs are successfully executed and met;
- Additional responsibilities as may be required including but not limited to:
Maintaining and updating training materials in training database; maintaining and monitoring a training budget; researching conferences and external training events that would benefit individuals or group staff development.
Direction and Decision Making:TheSenior Organizing Capacity Coordinatoris a member of the staff development team of the SEIU Organizing Capacity Center (within the SEIU National Organizing Dept) and reports directly to the Organizing Capacity Center Director.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Three (3)years of experience in developing curriculum and training and demonstrated experience with adult educationor training.
- Minimum seven (7) years ofnew (external)labor organizing experience; or a combination of a minimum of five (5) years external labor organizing and two (2) years of internal (member) organizing or relevant issue-based community organizing;
- Minimum of three (3) years of campaign planning and management experience including developing and managing multi-component campaigns; working with interdisciplinary campaign teams;
- Bilingual fluency in English/Spanish is preferred.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills Needed
- Proven experience with effective curriculum development including designing and adapting curriculum handouts and other materials that are learner-centered participatory and incorporates popular education approaches;
- Extensive firsthand knowledge of the practices skills and pedagogy related to organizing including developing and executing union recognition campaigns union contract and/or community organizing issue campaigns
- Advanced facilitation skills: being able to navigate group discussions and guide productive discussions among audiences of diverse backgrounds worldviews political inclinations and opinions. Ability to foster respectful listening spaces and draw out learning experiences from all learners contributions.
- Proven ability todevelopand manage effective organizing teams and to incorporate effective staff developmentbest practices tools andtechniques in their work managing teams;
- Demonstrated commitment to progressive social economic and racial justice
- Demonstrated experience with applying best practices and principles related to Diversity Equity and Inclusion and applying a racial justice lens to the work;
- Demonstrated experience and ability to exercise good judgment working independently in complex political situations;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent listening skills;
- Proven leadership skills and ability to work with a diversity of people;
- Ability to understand and analyze organizational campaign training and staff development needs to effectively align with training curricula materials and practice exercises;
- Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Word Power PointCanva Zoomand/or othercomputer software in order to produce effective training materials;
- Ability to handle multiple projects and meet established timelines;
- A self-starter with proven ability to work independently with support to conceptualize design execute assess and refine capacity-building programs and learning spaces;
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment;
- Has a valid Drivers license and the ability and willingness to travel by airplane;
- Ability and willingness to travel and work long and extended hours. The job involves regular travel away from home for days at a time.
Physical Requirements:Work is generally performed in an office ortraining/conferenceroomsetting but may be required to work in other settings conducive to performing the tasks required to complete include work-site visits rallies strikes or other union activity. Long and extended hoursare sometimes required as well as regulartravel.
