Job Description

A doctoral degree with training in epidemiology is required along with qualifications sufficient for an appointment as an Associate or Full Professor at theUniversity of Maryland School of Medicine.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $300000$400000. The referenced salary range reflects the AAMC base pay guidelines which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not include all components of the departments compensation program; therefore the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the salary range stated herein.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) seeks a strategic leader and an accomplished researcher to serve as Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH).

Building on the departments rich history of success the next Chair will partner with colleagues across EPH to develop a strategic integrative vision for the departments future. The Chair will have the opportunity to grow one of the largest non-clinical departments at the School of Medicine expanding research and education deepening collaborations across the institution and making a positive impact on public health in Maryland and beyond.

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health has been at the forefront of public health discovery since its inception in 1833. EPH is renowned for innovative research in gerontology cancer epidemiology genomic and infectious disease epidemiology translational toxicology biostatistics and bioinformatics preventive medicine and health disparities and population health. The department has a rich history of translating interdisciplinary research to clinical practice and community-based interventions to prevent disease and improve public health.

The department is committed to training the next generation of public health scientists and practitioners. EPH comprises 62 faculty members with primary appointments in the department which offers degree programs in epidemiology gerontology public health and clinical research and maintains research projects around the globe.

EPH ranks #3 in total NIH funding among epidemiology departments in U.S. public medical schools and #9 among all U.S. schools of medicine according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The department generates approximately 8% of all NIH funding at UMSOM. EPH faculty received 124 awards totaling $25M in extramural funding in FY24.

UMSOM was established in 1807 and is one of the oldest public medical schools in the country. UMSOM is known for synergy among the clinical and basic science departments and for pioneering new treatments in many areas of strength which include transplant science infectious disease cancer care at the University of Maryland Marlene & Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and shock trauma at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center the nations first and only integrated trauma hospital where groundbreaking research and innovative medical procedures save thousands of lives every year.

A leading U.S. academic medical center UMSOM is currently among the top public medical schools in the country with an impressive $530 million in extramural research funding. This funding ranks UMSOM at #9 among all public medical schools and #32 among all medical schools for research grants and contract expenditures.
