Recovery Support Specialist- Living Room

The Association for Individual Development (AID) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower people with physical developmental intellectual mental health challenges; those who have suffered a trauma; and those at risk to enjoy lives of dignity and purpose. We are looking for aRecovery Support Specialistfor our Living Room Program who demonstrates this mission and wants to work for an organization that makes a difference in the community.

What will you be doing

The Living Room Recovery Support Specialist is an individual with lived mental health service experience. The first point of contact greeting and welcoming all who enter the Living Room.

  • Conducts assessments and develops crisis stabilization plans in collaboration with the client and clients identified supports.
  • Provides education and linkage to community recovery support systems.
  • Develop and facilitate positive relationships between consumers and team members
  • Provide aid & support increase participant motivation for services.
  • Assist with utilizing appropriate coping mechanisms and reduce barriers to services by educating consumers about services natural community supports and transportation.
  • Participate in AIDs internal RSS committee and will complete continuing education yearly to maintain their CRSS certificate.
  • Attend to scheduled work hours and be flexible to meet client and program needs as assigned by Program Manager or Director.
  • Act as primary to triage and assist individuals in crisis.
  • Responsible to provide independent program coverage when scheduled.
  • Provide effective individual crisis counseling
    • Consult with case manager etc.
    • Use intervention tactics to reduce symptomology.
  • Ensure the delivery of quality Living Room services and ensuring documentation of assessments suicide assessments crisis stabilization plans and appropriate referrals are completed.
  • Administer screening tools including crisis assessments suicide/homicide assessments and develop crisis stabilization plans.
  • Offer and complete intake paperwork to provide a smooth transition to open client to long term behavioral health services during their interaction at the Living Room.
  • Assist with maintaining and monitoring safety coordinate engagement contribute to a welcoming atmosphere and provide support for expediting linkage to other programs.
  • Build immediate rapport provide emotional support and validation to individuals in crisis.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing in triage to complete suicide/homicide lethality checklists to determine the severity of the individual and to determine the appropriateness of the Living Room.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques through active listening emotional support trauma informed care and crisis intervention services.
  • Repeat a suicide lethality assessment prior to the individual leaving the Living Room.
  • Assist in providing individualized coping skills and resources and will incorporate the development of an effective crisis stabilization plan that is client-centered.
  • Assist clients in returning back to their natural environment when stabilization is complete.
  • Maintain and complete a daily log capturing client interactions including date time and location for each shift and submit daily log to supervisor at the end of each shift.
  • Prioritize the least restrictive appropriate level of care for each individual served; however acknowledge that there are circumstances which require additional intervention to ensure the safety of the individual. When necessary assist in a smooth transition to an inpatient psychiatric facility or emergency department if a higher level of care is warranted after appropriate assessments have been completed.
  • Complete all required documentation in accordance with MRO Rule 132 payers and other applicable licensing and accreditation assigned and required documentation completed in a timely manner and according to department standards.
  • Attend clinical supervision a minimum of once per month and additionally as assigned.
  • Acquire and maintain certification in First Aid Adult CPR non-violent crisis intervention (CPI) ASSIST and IMCANS.
  • Ensure that care provided integrates all facets of clients lives including mental/emotional health physical health/wellness employment and education social and family relationships substance use/abuse issues & housing needs.
  • Complete clinical assessments that meet the requirements of program funders and applicable administrative rules.
  • Provide services that promote the reduction of crisis episodes and increased functioning in order to meet rehabilitative resiliency and recovery goals.
  • Maintain records of individuals in the Living Room program in accordance to Rule 132 payers and accreditation bodies. Assist in conducting regular quality assurance of records as assigned.
  • Assure case records are properly maintained per agency procedures including scanning necessary paperwork into Cx360 per procedure.
  • Recognize emergency situations and take appropriate action. Contact Manager and Director per procedure. Complete necessary paperwork correctly (incident reports petitions case notes).
  • Promote awareness of mental health both internally and externally.
  • Promotes awareness and respect for the diversity of our clientsemployees families and other stakeholders.
  • Provide effective services for clients individual needs and in line with client rights and the Mental Health Recovery Model.
  • Utilizes a team approach to provide services including triaging client needs and assigning tasks.
  • Facilitate educational sessions including mental physical and social skills to create and offer the opportunity for participation in a peer support group for clients.
  • Create a crisis stabilization plan in collaboration with every individual during their Living Room Visit.
  • Interact with 100% of the total number of guests.
  • Provide outpatient case management follow up at a minimum of 2 times to facilitate linkage into appropriate services support and education.
  • Willingness to self-disclose personal experience as a consumer of mental health services and/or dual diagnosis services.
  • Participate in statewide events/summits/trainings/activities that support the education/development/promotion of WHAM WRAP MHFA and Recovery Support and Consumer Provider Services.
  • Commitment and ability to practice within the domains and ethics of the CRSS (certified recovery support specialist).

What will you bring to the table

Education: High School Diploma.

License/certifications: CRSS (Certified Recovery Support Specialist) certification required or must be obtained after one year of hire and maintained during employment.

Experience: Some mental health experience preferred. Lived experience with mental health or substance use. Individual must be in a state of recovery.

Physical: Position requires ability to communicate in-person telephone and in group settings. Navigation of stairs.

Equipment: Position operates in a professional office environment. Role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones copiers and filing cabinets. Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows.

Additional Requirements:

  • Flexibility to work12 hour shifts overnight 6pm-6am. Alternating weekends holidays
  • On call responsibilities.
  • Cover non-scheduled shifts as needed.
  • Reliable means of transportation to and from work.
  • Maintain automobile liability insurance as defined by AIDs personnel policies.
  • Maintain valid Illinois drivers license and good driving record as defined by AID driver eligibility requirements
  • Drive self and clients in agency or personal vehicle if needed.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations demonstrating cultural competency and community awareness.
  • Complete and maintain all necessary trainings as required within 30 days of hire and annually.
  • Must acquire and maintain certifications in First Aid CPR Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training CEUs and other relevant trainings.
