About the Agency
The mission of the Virginia State Fire Marshals Office (SFMO) is to make fire safety a way of life in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We will accomplish this by educating citizens and visitors about fire hazards and fire prevention techniques; identifying factors that increase risks from fire; and implementing programs to reduce those risks. The State Fire Marshals Office also ensures compliance with the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) and related provisions of the Uniform Statewide Building Code through education and progressive enforcement activities including:

Fire prevention inspections of schools nightclubs health care facilities and other occupancies in localities that do not have a local fire code official
Fire prevention inspections of state-owned facilities including colleges and universities health care and correctional facilities and offices
Inspection of construction projects in state facilities
Investigation of complaints
Providing technical assistance to local building and fire officials in the application and enforcement of the Statewide Fire Prevention Code and the fire safety related provisions of the Uniform Statewide Building Code
Analyzing fire incidents to identify needed changes to fire safety related code provisions
Administering programs to regulate explosives fireworks and fire-safe cigarettes.

About the Position
The Virginia State Fire Marshals office is seeking a Deputy I State Fire Marshal to perform duties including but not limited to inspecting a variety of public and private buildings (i.e. institutional industrial commercial residential etc.) to ensure compliance with applicable fire safety regulations including the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) the Virginia Construction Code (VCC) the Virginia Public Building Safety Regulations (VPBSR) and other applicable codes and standards. The incumbent of this position will also provide technical assistance to local fire marshals and to local/state building officials on the interpretation and application of fire safety regulations and conducts training on fire safety related topics to stakeholders as needed.

This position has a Virginia Emergency Support Team (VEST) assignment and is designated as essential personnel. VEST assignments will include providing support during an emergency incident either within the Virginia Emergency Operations Center (VEOC) in a field assignment or in support of recovery operations and maintaining situational awareness throughout the region. Employees may be required to work during emergency situations such as inclement weather and natural or man-made disasters/events as directed. This may require irregular work hours work at locations other than the official duty station and may also include duties other than those specified in the employees official Employee Work Profile/job description.

Minimum Qualifications

Working knowledge of the administration and enforcement of Virginia fire safety and building regulations including the Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) Virginia Construction Code (VCC) Virginia Public Building Safety Regulations (VPBSR) and other applicable codes and standards.
Fire Prevention Inspector as issued by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) or the ability to obtain within 18 months of employment.
Fire Inspector II (NFPA 1031) from an accredited training organization recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia (IFSAC or ProBoard) or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of employment.
Fire Protection Inspector as issued by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) or ability to obtain within three (3) years of employment.
Experience demonstrating the ability to independently conduct fire prevention inspections of a broad array of occupancies including educational business assembly industrial health care residential mercantile institutional (detention and correctional facilities) or similar facilities.
Experience Demonstrating the ability to research analyze interpret and apply multiple regulatory and code requirements such as building fire prevention mechanical electrical and plumbing codes and referenced standards.
Working knowledge of the principles of fire protection design engineering and construction.
Experience demonstrating the ability to understand and interpret basic construction documents concerning fire protection features and systems architectural mechanical electrical and plumbing features to determine code compliance.
Experience demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the relationship and hierarchy between building fire and other related codes and standards.
Working knowledge of fire detection and alarm systems water-based fire suppression systems including fire sprinklers and fire pumps special hazard fire suppression systems and manual firefighting operations.
Experience demonstrating the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with local fire officials local and state building officials industry professionals professional organizations etc.
Working knowledge of computers and associated software including word processing spreadsheets databases E-mail and presentation programs such as PowerPoint.
Experience communicating verbally with demonstrated ability to deliver trainings/presentations to diverse stakeholders and experience communicating in writing with demonstrated ability to draft/develop presentation materials technical reports and other similar forms correspondence.
Must be available to work days evenings nights and weekends as needed as well as be able to travel overnight as needed.
Valid Virginia drivers license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Other: Occasional overnight travel may be required as needed. U.S. Citizen at least 18 years of age. A one-year probationary period is required of all newly hired and re-hired employees.
