Position Summary
The Sheps Research Systems unit is seeking a highly experienced Linux Systems Administrator to join our team in a part-time consulting and mentorship role. This position is ideal for a recently retired professional looking to remain engaged in the field while supporting meaningful work. Administrator will play a dual role: Mentor and technical guide for junior-level systems administrators managing RHEL -based infrastructure. Consultant and architect for developing computing environments that support advanced research in AI/ML-driven health care delivery. This is a unique opportunity to contribute strong technical expertise to real-world applications in health care research and support the next generation of system administrators.
Required Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Required Qualifications Competencies and Experience: * Experience with Linux systems administration in complex environments * Bachelors degree in computer science * Strong knowledge of machine learning and artificial intelligence models * Excellent communication mentoring and collaboration skills * Deep knowledge of system performance tuning configuration management and security * Proven experience designing or supporting environments for AI/ML workloads (e.g. GPU nodes distributed training scalable storage)
Preferred Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Preferred Qualifications Competencies and Experience: * Hands-on experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux ( RHEL 8/9) in production environments. * Proficiency in scripting or programming languages such as Python or Ruby. * Familiarity with Red Hat tools (Satellite Ansible etc.). * Knowledge of UNCs campus computing environment or experience working in similar academic research institutions. * Experience working in or supporting health care or biomedical research environments. * Strong organizational skills with the ability to develop documentation and training resources.
