Description

Role Overview:
An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated health care assistant to provide 1:1 care for a child with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and complex medical needs.
This will enable them to access learning with their peers in a safe inclusive and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Medical and Personal Care:
Provide daily 1:1 care for the pupil during school hours in line with their individual healthcare plan.
To deliver and monitor their tracheostomy care including suctioning and emergency intervention if needed.
To administer medication in accordance with school policy and NHS guidelines.
Support the child with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) or gastro-jejunostomy care and feeding.
Monitor oxygen levels and administer oxygen via the tracheostomy when required.
Provide support during and after epileptic seizures following the pupils epilepsy plan.
Complete personal care duties with dignity and respect including toileting and repositioning using
moving aids where needed.
To recognise and respond to signs of distress and decline in health.
To act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
To support the pupil in communicating their needs and adapting to their communication system and ensuring their consent is gained.
Maintain accurate daily health and care records using the schools online system to include any adverse incidents.
Maintain close working relationships and liaise with external health and therapeutic agencies.


Educational Support:
To work under the direction of the class teacher to support the pupils learning in line with their education health and care plan (EHCP).
To modify activities to ensure accessibility engagement and safety for the pupil with guidance from the teacher.

Safeguarding and compliance:
To adhere to school safeguarding health and safety medication and supporting pupils with medical needs policies at all times.
To escalate concerns through the appropriate channels regarding the pupils health wellbeing or safety promptly.
To maintain confidentiality in line with General Data Protection Regulation and school policy.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:
Proven experience in supporting children with complex medical needs
Relevant clinical care training with the expectation to undertake refresher courses when needed (possibility of training for the right candidate):
Tracheostomy care and suctioning
Enteral feeding
Medication administration
Monitoring and administration of oxygen via tracheostomy
Epilepsy management

Desirable:
Experience in a school setting
Experience in work with children with PMLD
