Job Duties
The Virginia State University Police Department is seeking a dependable and knowledgeable Fire Safety Inspection Technician to join our campus safety team. This role is essential in ensuring the universitys compliance with fire safety codes and maintaining a safe environment for students faculty staff and visitors. Prepare and maintain a variety of fire and safety programs in accordance with the Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) and OSHA Standards 1910 & 1926. Conduct fire safety and occupational safety inspections of buildings and structures. Assist with inspecting and testing fire alarm systems and other safety detectors devices and systems. Test and verify the functionality of fire alarm systems emergency lighting and fire suppression equipment. Conduct monthly inspections of portable fire extinguishers. Conduct monthly and/or semiannual inspections of smoke detectors and CO2 Detectors as required by SFPC. Respond to and repair various fire alarms and fire sprinkler malfunctions. Maintain files of fire extinguisher logs maintenance and inspections as required by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Conduct fire safety drills as required by policy and procedures. Accompany inspectors from various state compliance offices and vendors on a university campus tour. Assist the campus Risk Management Officer in complying with safety policies and procedures. Assist with Emergency Management fire safety processes and events. Have knowledge in developing and implementing strategies to mitigate prepare for respond to and recover from crisis and emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience and working knowledge of fire alarm systems sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers.
Knowledge of fire enforcement basic safety practices/procedures and alarm systems.
Must have knowledge of a variety of fire and safety programs per the Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) and OSHA Standards 1910 & 1926.
Extensive knowledge of fire prevention codes NFPA standards and local/state fire regulations.
Must have a working knowledge of VA Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) practices and procedures.
Experience and extensive working knowledge of fire alarm systems sprinkler systems and other safety detectors devices and systems.
Ability to communicate with contract personnel professionally and efficiently.
Must have extensive knowledge of fire enforcement basic safety practices/procedures and alarm systems.
Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergencies.
Must have the ability to obtain job-related certifications.
Extensive knowledge of fire prevention codes NFPA standards and local/state fire regulations.
Experience in fire alarm systems code enforcement and fire safety inspections.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment.
Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills. Required to have a valid drivers license.
No conviction of felonies and/or habitual misdemeanors; no conviction of or guilty plea or no contest pleas to misdemeanors involving moral turpitude including petit larceny; any misdemeanor sex offense; or any domestic assault.
Must be willing to work any shift and be on call.
Required to have a High School diploma or GED.

VSU demonstrates compliance with its Faculty Credentialing Policy #2301 for all applicable education experience licensure and certification requirements in the selection and hiring of its faculty.

Fire Fighter 1 and/or 2 and code enforcement certifications preferred.
