JOB TITLE:

Branding Iron Editor-in-Chief

JOB PURPOSE:

To provide overall supervision of the Branding Iron newspaper.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Have overall responsibility for newspaper.
  2. Work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
  3. Verify and edit newspaper copy prior to composition.
  4. Prepare newspaper dummy for news and Page 1 material.
  5. Supervise the work of newspaper section editors.
  6. Supervise the work of newspapers assistant editor and copy editor.
  7. Supervise the work of the photo editor.
  8. Supervise the work of news staff writers.
  9. Work collaboratively with the BI Online editor and the Social Media editor to ensure information is being posted to the Web site in a timely manner.
  10. Produce articles for both the print and online editions.
  11. Provide material for editorial op-ed pages.
  12. Dummy editorial op-ed pages.
  13. Serve as public relations person for the paper.
  14. Conduct staff meetings as necessary.
  15. Attend Student Media Board meetings as ex-officio member.
  16. Serve as a direct line to adviser sales manager production coordinator and business manager.
  17. Serve as a contact person with Communication and Mass Media Department.
  18. Provide written Editorial Policy to the Student Media Board at the first fall meeting.
  19. Superintend the operations of the newspaper production and deadline schedules.
  20. Need to be involved in active recruitment for class visits.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Full-time student
  2. Minimum 2.5 GPA
  3. Newspaper experience including writing news stories.
  4. Must be available to start work Aug. 18 2025
  5. Must be available for publication deadlines on Sundays and Wednesday nights.
  6. Must be available Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for training.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Some supervisory experience.
  2. Basic knowledge of what goes into a good newspaper story as well as other newspaper editorial content.
  3. Some prior newspaper experience.
  4. Knowledge of AP style or willingness to learn.
