About The Role

We are excited to offer an opening to join our vibrant and innovative Springer Journals publishing team at Springer Nature working on our respected and high-profile biomedical joining the team you would become part of one of the worlds leading global scientific and medical publishers with staff based in Europe Asia and the Americas. We have a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a passion for scientific advancement to develop their publishing career and work alongside some of the best researchers in this field.

As Publisher you would be responsible for a defined list of journals within the Biomedicine group working as part of the team to grow the prestigious British Dental Journal portfolio including the flagship BDJ and fully open access BDJ Open through strategic development. To develop the portfolio youll enjoy being proactive creative and data-driven to devise and implement journal development plans. As the primary publishing contact for your journals youll work alongside leading academics and with colleagues from across the business meaning excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships are key to ensure the smooth running and success of the journal this role youll gain exposure to all aspects of the academic journal publishing industry.

Role Responsibilities:

  • In line with the overall Springer Nature and portfolio strategy use your publishing and field-specific knowledge to actively identify opportunities and to develop and implement journal development strategies for your journal titles.

  • Work closely with Editorial teams to plan and commission content special issues and topical collections with a clear focus on the professional and research interests and needs of the readership and authors.

  • Work with the Editorial Publishing and Production teams to ensure content is timely and quality is maintained at the highest levels including copyediting support proofing and support of the external editorial teams in managing peer review optimising manuscript flow and ensuring a quality service is delivered to authors and referees.

  • Ensure timely and correct data entry into relevant systems and databases to enable monitoring of key dates and action taking as appropriate to make honoraria payments and that journal information guidelines and websites are kept up to date.

  • Ensure appropriate representation in indexing services and work to ensure journals are performing at the appropriate level for acceptance by selective services.

  • Be familiar with COPE Guidelines to be able to advise on ethical queries and ensure all journals in your portfolio comply with these.

  • Manage set-up activities for journals within your cluster within expected timeframes.

  • Work with internal teams and the Executive Publisher to support regular reporting to stakeholders and to ensure relevant contracts are kept up to date and contractual payments are arranged.

  • Stay up to date with Springer Nature business goals and OA strategy. Monitor the open access levels of your journals and work with your line manager to implement a strategy to support open access development.

  • Work with marketing to support timely and appropriate promotion of the journals across multiple channels (e.g. blogs press releases social media etc).

  • Resolve queries and correspond with Authors Reviewers and Editors by a variety of communication channels ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion and escalated when .

  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the Editors-in-Chief Editorial Board Members and other stakeholders acting as their key point of contact for publishing matters. This includes organizing newsletters and hosting Editorial Board meetings and other meetings as .

  • Represent Springer Nature and the journals externally at press and industry events conferences and professional meetings to support sales teams and to promote the journals.

  • Undertake any other activities to ensure timely and successful continuation and publication of the Journals as they arise and subject to consultation.

Experience Skills and Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to bachelors degree level

  • Sound experience of Journal editorial management

  • Demonstrated knowledge of STM journals publishing including peer review publication ethics citation metrics business models and current developments in the market

  • Meticulous copyediting and proofreading skills and good eye for detail

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills in person and by email including ability to compose sensitive correspondence requiring tact accuracy and confidentiality

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with excellent attention to detail

  • Proven ability to manage time and projects successfully to meet deadlines achieve agreed goals and deal with a wide variety of tasks prioritising appropriately

  • Experience in commissioning editorial content for example articles books topical collections etc

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

  • Highly customer focused

  • Takes ownership to drive and complete tasks

  • Ability to adapt quickly to change

  • A high level of computer literacy

Desirable

  • An interest in dentistry and related disciplines

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Prior experience working in a similar publishing role in a bioscience-related field

  • Experience developing journals in line with business objectives

  • Experience of establishing strong communities around specific journals

  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent Springer Nature at external events

  • Experience of using a peer review management system such as eJP or Editorial Manager would be an advantage

  • Previous experience with workflow management tools and Adobe InCopy would be ideal but is not essential.
