Job Description

Description

This position promotes student success and increases student enrollment and retention through the provision of quality academic advising regular monitoring of students academic progress and appropriate referral for students who are at-risk or in need of additional resources.

Job title and salary will be determined by the successful candidates qualifications relevant to the position.

Essential Job Duties

  • Advise assigned advisees during the freshman and sophomore year;
  • Assist students in the transition to UNA ensure correct application of transfer credits to their degree plan and help them transition to their academic department for advising after their first semester;
  • Work to develop and compile packets for new and existing student orientation events;
  • Assist with orientation freshmen and transfer events preview day etc;
  • Consult regularly with faculty colleagues in order to have up-to-date information;
  • Discuss and reinforce linkages and relationships between advisees and their instructional programs including developing relationships with faculty and peers in their disciplines;
  • Document advising appointments through department-approved check sheets and software programs currently Degree Works;
  • Interpret and provide rationale for institutional policies procedures and requirements;
  • Regularly monitor all advisees using the universitys early alert software and follow-up with the advisees who are at-risk of failing or dropping out of a course(s);
  • Inform and if necessary refer students to other institutional resources when academic attitudinal attendance or other problems require intervention by other professionals (e.g. case management);
  • Proactively contact and maintain availability for student advisees on a regular basis;
  • Office hours must be posted on the office door and given to advisees early in the semester;
  • Work extended hours during pre-registration advising;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

    Additional Duties (Academic Advisor);
  • Provide training and mentorship for new staff and student employees;
  • Responsible for identifying an area for enhancing departmental services (e.g. integration of new technologies) and develop and maintain a plan for continuous improvement in that area.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree is required;
  • One to two years of related experience preferred;
  • Masters degree or 2 years of related higher education experience is required for consideration for hire at the Academic Advisor level.
