Job Description

Instructor Sterile Processing Technician Teacher Description

The sterile processing technician (SPT) instructor will lead a classroom with a strong dedication to influencing positive student outcomes including 95% retention 90% certification and 75% employment within six month after completing the class. All instructors are expected to model best practice professionalism on punctuality communication classroom management delivery of instruction and assessment of learning. This job description reflects the education major duties tasks and responsibilities usually performed by people working in that position.

Educational Requirements: VU or CCI - Must possess a credential in the field of sterile processing through a national certification agency and have demonstrated work experience in the field of sterile processing and/or surgical technology. Prior teaching experience preferred.

Professional Skills Requirements:

  • Ensure CCI has outfitted your classroom with needed supplies curriculum textbooks and other materials one (1) week prior to class starting;
  • Provide dynamic instruction that engages critical thinking vocabulary development and skills;
  • Review Academic Ethics policies and Safety Procedures on first day of class;
  • Educate the students about the Student Professionalism Rubric articulating the required professionalism needed to be considered industry ready and providing evaluation feedback at twice a semester;
  • Cultivate high level of commitment and professionalism by creating the expectation that the classroom will be run with industry standards requiring others before self and a 100% attendance rate;
  • Foster a Wayne family mindset moving all students being committed to each others success and structuring accountability partners until 100% certification rate is achieved;
  • Identify immediately any student barriers or document successes by completing the CT Teacher Report and submit to the CT Supervisor. Immediate resources can be found on 2-4 industry human resource professionals or hiring managers as guest speakers through Google Meets or classroom visits;
  • Ensure all students have industry ready resumes and externship documents on file by the third week of class which will allow CCI and the Employment Supervisor to facilitate placement for student externships;
  • Participate in meetings and trainings organized by industry associations to equip practitioners with latest trends and practices in the medical assistant field and transfer acquired knowledge to students;
  • Counsel students on their career choices informing them of best opportunities and serve as an advocate to open doors and leverage opportunities in the field.
  • Provide useful suggestions to CCI on ways to improve the curriculum in order to foster effective learning;
  • Identify a Student Ambassador as a classroom leader who will assist other students and serve as a spokesperson at events and for Area 31 Career Center Tours;
  • Cultivate students who emulate the Colleges employability skills: adaptability communication information processing problem solving responsibility and teamwork.

Instructional Requirements:

  • Plan engaging classroom lessons that require high level thinking communication journaling on professional communication skills as well as industry math;
  • Consider all student learning styles and adapt curriculum delivery to address auditory visual social solitary physical and logical learners;
  • Follow the sequence in the sterile processing technician curriculum for students comprehension.
  • Recruit a partner teacher with CCI to ensure that if you have to miss a class that there is a sub plan in place to deliver instruction.
  • Provide 30-60 minutes of skills lab each classroom period to ensure students master basic SPT skills
  • Prepare detailed lecture notes and weekly sub plans on each topic to be taught in line with acceptable standards in the institution and deliver lectures in class with authority on the given topic;
  • Carryout research on topics to identify various insights and angles in the SPT field to make students versatile in discharging their duties on the job;
  • Create room for interaction and students participation in class to research different opinions on a given topic;
  • Move throughout the classroom to assess and monitor the academic activities of students to ensure they are doing well and provide instructional support where they are experiencing difficulties;
  • Promote the use of technology in teaching
  • Make supplemental reading materials and textbooks available to students to encourage personal learning and extensive reading

Assessment Requirements:

  • Administer tests and assignments to students to assess their understanding of topics they have taken as well as to measure the efficiency of the teaching methods adopted;
  • Evaluate students performances and create effective means of rewarding excelling students while encouraging those not doing so well by working with them to improve their academic performances;
  • Conduct weekly skills assessments for individual students to ensure students demonstrate mastery in the required skills areas;
  • Facilitate the process to conclude the certification testing by the last day of class.
