The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a law enforcement officer educator and informal counselor within the school environment. Employed by the school corporation in partnership with the local law enforcement agency the SRO works to ensure a safe and secure learning environment foster positive relationships between students and law enforcement and serve as a vital resource to students staff and families.
Law Enforcement & Safety:
Enforce federal state and local laws within school property.
Conduct investigations of crimes occurring on or involving school grounds.
Respond to and manage emergency situations on campus.
Deter and address threats to the safety of students and staff including violence trespassing and criminal behavior.
Coordinate with emergency response personnel in the event of a critical incident.
School and Community Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with school administrators to develop and implement safety protocols and emergency response plans.
Support enforcement of school policies and student conduct guidelines.
Act as a liaison between the school law enforcement juvenile justice system and community agencies.
Provide guidance to students and staff related to legal issues and safety.
Education and Prevention:
Deliver classroom presentations on topics such as drug prevention internet safety conflict resolution and laws affecting youth.
Promote awareness of safety law and citizenship among the student body.
Participate in school assemblies staff meetings and community forums as requested.
Mentorship and Student Support:
Serve as a visible and approachable presence on campus to build trust with students.
Provide informal counseling to students on law-related matters.
Make appropriate referrals to counseling social services or juvenile authorities as needed.
Mediate conflicts among students to prevent escalation.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Maintain accurate records of incidents interventions and reports.
Assist in planning and conducting school safety drills and trainings.
Prepare reports for school administration and law enforcement as required.
Must be a certified (or retired) law enforcement officer in the State of Indiana (or relevant state).
Minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience preferred.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with youth families school staff and community members.
Understanding of adolescent development and school culture.
