A Dean is a leader who supports students wellbeing and partners with colleagues across Avenues and with students families to support each student to thrive. Deans build powerful lasting relationships with students and nurture their development and wellbeing. Deans associate division heads and teachers work together closely to make the secondary experience a rewarding one for each student. The dean of student life for upper grades will coordinate student life across the upper grades and nurture a warm and welcoming community experience for students and families.
WHAT YOULL DO
Nurture students growth development and community experience
- Develop strong ongoing relationships with parents and students
- Monitor and guide upper grade students academic progress and social and emotional well-being.
- Uphold high standards of personal conduct by students
- Create programming and supports for new upper grades students and families ensuring a smooth transition to Avenues
- Create programming and supports for our international student community
- Lead community meetings for upper grades with a focus on our community values and community-building
- Plan and lead community-wide events for upper grades students in close collaboration with the operations team.
- Collaborate with Student Success Team for students who need more intensive support with academics social/emotional skills attendance or physical health issues
- Track attendance and lead interventions for students
- Lead any responses to escalated disciplinary cases
- Support administration of standardized testing for upper grades
Be a leader and collaborator
- Partner with faculty associate division heads and members of the student success team to build strong communities of students
- Develop plans to support students success in school and follow through with colleagues and families to ensure student needs are met
- Be relentlessly resourceful and highly collaborative guiding colleagues on how to best support each individual students success growth and happiness
- Enthusiastically contribute to a deans team dedicated to all Avenues students wellbeing

- Youve worked extensively with upper grades students in classrooms or other contexts
- You love and respect adolescents. You feel deeply passionate about supporting them to learn grow and thrive as people
- You bring experience with advisory and social-emotional learning
- You build deep relationships with students and their families
- You are a committed collaborator who works enthusiastically with other adults in supporting student success and is able to lead through influence not position.
- You identify opportunities to support students take action and mobilize resources on their behalf
- You communicate in clear compelling ways with a high level of accountability and responsiveness
- You navigate difficult conversations with grace and empathy
- You effectively handle multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment
REQUIREMENTS
- Solid experience working with upper grades students in a counseling-related capacity
- Strong experience with social-emotional development curriculum
- Extraordinary ability to build relationships with middle school students and their families
- Ability to identify opportunities to support students take action and mobilize resources on their behalf
- Deep understanding of developmental stage and social-emotional needs of middle schoolers and a range of proven approaches to address them
- Clear compelling communicator in speaking and writing individually and in large groups
- High emotional intelligence to navigate difficult conversations with grace and empathy
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills able to smoothly handle multiple priorities tasks and deadlines
- Develop plans to support students success in school and follow through with colleagues and families to ensure student needs are met
- Be relentlessly resourceful and highly collaborative guiding colleagues on how to best support each individual students success growth and happiness
