Job Description

3 positions available

30 hours/week (6 hours/day)

(All inclusive of hour unpaid lunch)

10 months per year

Teacher Aides may be required to provide personal care to students including toileting. Lifting may be involved. Aides may be working in life skills classrooms health office job coaching or with special needs students.

  • Must be willing to work collaboratively with the classroom teacher and special education teachers
  • Must be able to lift the child and help with toileting needs and other specific personal duties related to children
  • Willing to support students with their academic and social-emotional needs
  • Must be able to easily follow directions and work independently when teacher is busy teaching
  • Must be willing to work with small groups
  • Must display a warm caring attitude and approach
  • Must have an understanding of the special needs of students
  • Must have strong communication skills
  • Must have ability to maintain confidentiality on student related issues.
  • Must have at least one year experience working with school aged children.

Duties: (may include the following)

  • Participation in Educational Activities - note taking reading supervision
  • Supervision of students not assigned to class (cafeteria library)
  • Record keeping of student activities/observations
  • Supervision of off-site work experience
  • Use of technology - copy machine computers
  • Welcome Desk greeter
  • Supervision of detention/in-school suspension

Non-competitive Civil Service job description:

Distinguishing Features of the Class: The work involves relieving school teachers in a large suburban school district of that part of their duties which while related to the teaching process can be performed by noncertified personnel. The work requires the incumbent to have some knowledge of the specific area of instruction performed by the teacher to which the teacher aide is assigned. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment and to have considerable ability in getting along with children. Does related work as required.

Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; OR
  2. Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved; OR
  3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

NOTE: This position is not designed to replace clerical positions such as Typist Stenographer or Clerk. Also it is not designed to assist a Teacher in the teaching process; this is reserved for Teaching Assistants. See Section 80.33 Rules of the Board of Regents and Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Special Requirements: Ability to establish good relationships with students teachers and others; ability to gain and hold the confidence of and to maintain a patient and understanding attitude towards school children; ability to maintain order in classrooms and to enforce school regulations with firmness; familiarity with classroom routine; good background or knowledge in specific field where specialized duties are involved; resourcefulness in conducting activities indirectly related to teaching process; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; dependability; neat personal appearance; tact; courtesy; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Reports to: All work is performed under the direct supervision of the teacher or school principal.

Starting pay rate for Aides: $18.90/hour

Hourly stipends apply as follows:

  • Split aide (assigned to both general education & PPS aide duties); UPK aide; Literacy aide; Primary Project aide; Health aide; Attendance aide - $0.50/hour
  • PPS aide; job coach aide - $1.50/hour
