TITLE:Special Education TeacherJOB DESCRIPTION:The Special education teacher is directly under the supervision of the Director of Sargent Center School and Special Education. He/she supports students with disabilities within a small group setting providing specialized instruction. The students are also supported within their enrichment classes such as martial arts theater PE recess. The Special Education teacher works collaboratively with the therapists teaching assistants and job coaches to modify work to the students appropriate level and ensure student access to academics peers and functional skills. The Special Education teacher facilitates the RI Alternate Assessment for students as well as PSATs SATs and or RICAS. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Rhode Island certification as a Special Educator at the level assignedThree years of experience as a special education teacher at the level assigned preferredSuccessful direct experience with children exhibiting social emotional and behavioral challengesSuccessful experience working with children with developmental disabilities intellectual disabilities and autismSuccessful experience and training in RI Alternate Assessments and other state assessmentsSuccessful experience working with a team including Teaching AssistantsUnderstanding of critical practices and systems of positive behavior supportEvidence of successful engagement with familiesKnowledge of state and federal special education eligibility criteriaKnowledge of special education laws and regulations and willingness to implement the special education processKnowledge of Individualized Education ProgramsStrong interpersonal skillsThe ability to work with educators administrators and parents to problem-solve challenging issuesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: a learning environment that is safe respectful and effective for meeting students learning and social/emotional/behavioral challenges; core academic instruction in compliance with Common Core/Essential Elements standards at multi grade levels and offer remediation as well as extension; learning opportunities that have an academic experiential and/or service based component; collaboratively and supportively with families faculty and administrators and outside treatment teams; Individualized Education Programs; and implement interventions in collaboration with other teachers; environments to increase the likelihood of success; sensitivity to cultural differences in social interaction patterns and styles; multiple instructional techniques such as role playing modeling and direct feedback to address learning challenges; students personal and social success by teaching social skills; adults in the integration of interventions to improve outcomes and coach adults in the implementation of identified interventions; data for regulatory compliance reports; analyze data to inform instruction and support school and district decision student records and protect their confidentiality; decision making framework that guides the selection integration and implementation of the best evidence based academic and behavioral practices for improving outcomes for all students; and encourage prosocial skills and behaviors; certification around desocialization strategies and physical other tasks as may be assigned by the Director of Sargent Center School and Special Education.
