This is the recognised standard for pre-employment screening of individuals with access to government information. Description of role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic Engineer or Senior Engineer to join the Numerical Modelling and Optimisation team here at TWI. You will solve challenging engineering issues by using techniques such as finite element analysis computational fluid dynamics and writing computer codes in programming languages such as Python Fortran and MATLAB.

Why join the Numerical Modelling and Optimisation team

The team supports a diverse range of industrial clients with the challenges they face and complements the work of many of the other teams at TWI by using finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics to simulate a wide variety of processes and situations in areas such as structural integrity assessment welding engineering and advanced materials. The team has a global client base spanning a broad range of industrial sectors including aerospace power generation oil and gas hydrogen transport and defence.

From day one you will contribute to solving real-world engineering problems for our clients and will rapidly gain experience in a broad range of modelling disciplines by joining a well-established team with over 130 years of combined experience in simulation. Various software and programming tools are employed predominantly Abaqus COMSOL Python Fortran and MATLAB.

What will you do

  • You will grow your expertise in finite element analysis and scripting through a variety of project activities.
  • You will work on your own initiative to solve problems with the support of colleagues.
  • You will lead industrial member funded projects from project acceptance to conclusion and contribute to the delivery of projects led by others. Delivering these will require you to excel in taking responsibility teamwork and adaptability.
  • You will develop trusting relationships with colleagues and clients by working with integrity and transparency. This will require you to display the TWI value of inclusion.
  • You will manage your own time and exploit any opportunities to grow and develop your expertise in relevant fields.
  • You will build commercial relationships by interacting with clients to present TWI technology establish their needs prepare proposals and win new work. This will require you to excel in customer focus.
  • You will produce high quality reports and/or research papers arising from project work.

Essential skills:

  • Strong record of applied achievement or academic achievement at degree or PhD level in Engineering Materials Science Mathematics Physics or related discipline.
  • Experience in scripting using programming languages for example MATLAB Python and Fortran.
  • Experience in data analysis for example assessing experimental results using techniques such as machine learning.
  • Positive and proactive attitude.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills to agree customer requirements and convey updates.
  • Works well with team members as well as alone. Helps and supports others.
  • Takes ownership of project work to deliver on-time and to high quality.
  • Able to balance the needs of multiple projects.

Highly desirable skills:

  • Experience in finite element modelling.
  • Working knowledge of Abaqus and COMSOL

Desirable skills:

  • Experience in manufacturing process (e.g. welding) simulation
  • Experience in structural integrity simulation for example fracture and fatigue assessments.
  • Management of interdisciplinary projects and tasks.
  • Professional accreditation such as NAFEMS-certified Profession Simulation Engineer Chartered Engineer/Mathematician
  • Experience in verification and validation principles and of comparing models to experimental results.
