Position Overview:

The primary responsibility is to act as liaison consultant organizer and key team member with the schools and the community in the integration of services procedures and protocols to support children with mental health needs and their families. This position is school based and is responsible for coordinating mental health services and prevention efforts as well as overseeing comprehensive supports for children with mental health challenges chronic stress and trauma.

The School Based Mental Health Coordinator will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to the overall school behavioral health and wellness efforts. This includes the development of a comprehensive plan to promote effective integration of the activities and efforts of the school.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

The School Behavioral Health & Wellness Coordinator is responsible for coordinating systems that support student and staff behavioral health & wellness components. They will work as a liaison between the Guidance Department Academic Resource Room and the Administration completed various tasks including:

  • Focus on core elements strategic approaches and guiding principles;
  • Collaborative partnerships between school families and the community including behavioral health providers;
  • Collaborative partnership with local Systems for identification of student and staff behavioral health & wellness needs (e.g. screening & assessment processes);
  • Early identification of student and staff trauma exposures;
  • Trauma-informed and trauma-responsive early intervention practices for students and staff;
  • Equitable behavioral health services and supports for students and their families and for the school staff;
  • Professional development for teachers administrators and other school staff;
  • Evidence-based peer-to-peer support;
  • Equitable integration of social and emotional learning (SEL) within all academic instruction for K-12;
  • Support of health education curriculum and instruction;
  • Equitable access to a full continuum of prevention programs and services that reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors;
  • Evidence-based interventions including those provided outside the classroom or outside of the school day;
  • Systematic evaluation of behavioral health & wellness supports (e.g. formative and summative evaluation processes);
  • Systematic connection to clinical treatment (when needed);
  • Sustainable policies that support behavioral health & wellness for students and staff;
  • Collaboration with technical assistance provider;
  • Monitor and support the communication and utilization of wrap-around services for students with mental health challenges or students in mental health crisis;
  • Provide technical support to schools and communities on mental health services interventions referrals programming and concerns;
  • Support students families and schools by coordinating with counseling agencies caseworkers probation officers community and support services etc. Work with other agencies to share information and coordinate services;
  • Coordinate prevention activities with District and community teams focused on engagement and empowerment of students and families. Work cooperatively with the District and the community on prevention media campaigns;
  • Coordinate collaborative activities for mental health awareness with mental health community partners and schools;
  • Assist the school in identifying gaps in mental health services;
  • Gather necessary data and reporting to ensure for accurate outcome based program evaluation.
  • Work with the Guidance Department and Administration to plan yearly Mental Health and Wellness Days for the student body.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Administration that meet the Mental Health and wellness needs of the student body.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a Masters degree in administration counseling psychology social work or related field
  • Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience in working with agencies who provide therapeutic interventions with children and families
  • Experience in working with school personnel and/or in school settings
  • Experience with creating and positively supporting / maintaining systems change
  • Computer experience and basic computer fluency
  • An ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills in working with diverse populations
  • A commitment to public health approaches community collaboration and client empowerment
  • An energetic and positive approach to the rapidly evolving changes and challenges of a complex workplace.
