Job Description

INCLUDES WORKING WITH EL STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelors Degree in social work counseling or teaching from an approved preparation program. Current/valid South Dakota Social Worker Counselor or Teacher Certificate preferred.


Experience:
None. Previous experience in school setting preferred.


Physical Requirements:
Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination. Frequent walking keyboarding speaking writing bending carrying pushing pulling sitting and turning. Some lifting up to 30 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.


Other Requirements:
Excellent written and verbal communication strategic planning problem solving organizational time management and conflict resolution skills. Computer proficiency in word processing spreadsheets data entry email and to keep information confidential.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES

  1. Serves as a liaison between school family and community.
  2. Works with students parents and school staff members to intervene in personal/social concerns.
  3. Collaborates and consults with the Department of Social Services and other agencies.
  4. Provides support for parents to communicate effectively with school staff members.
  5. Arranges educational opportunities for parents.
  6. Intervenes when excessive absenteeism and truancy is prevalent.
  7. Works with School Counselors and Social Workers as necessary.
  8. Provides orientation of students to new situations.
  9. Consults with teachers staff parents and other significant people regarding the needs of students.
  10. Facilitates individual or small group lessons on social skills or school success activities.
  11. Conducts home visits.
  12. Assists with academic recovery.
  13. Reports suspected child abuse/neglect.
  14. Attends required meetings.
  15. Prepares reports as required.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.
