DESCRIPTION
The Driver IV in the Street Department is responsible for the navigation and operation of large trucks and trailers throughout the city. This position requires a skilled driver to safely navigate city streets with heavy equipment that exceeds the normal length weight and width of passenger vehicles to safely load and unload heavy equipment unsupervised and to communicate effectively.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Valid commercial drivers license (CDL) Class A is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a commercial driver preferably in hauling heavy equipment with drop deck trailer or low-boy trailer.
- Clean driving record with no history of major traffic violations or accidents.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of traffic laws regulations and safety practices related to commercial driving.
- Skills in communication to interact professionally with coworkers supervisors and the public.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including bending twisting and prolonged sitting.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and environments.
- Ability to operate and maneuver large vehicles in tight spaces and adverse conditions.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure proper functioning and compliance with safety standards including checking fluid levels tire pressure brakes and lights.
- Maneuver vehicles safely in various traffic and road conditions including congested areas narrow streets and inclement weather while adhering to traffic laws and regulations.
- Communicate effectively with departmental dispatchers supervisors and coworkers to coordinate route assignments report issues or concerns and provide updates on job progress.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of new drivers providing guidance on route navigation vehicle operation and safety procedures.
- Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of vehicles including washing fueling and minor repairs to ensure proper maintenance and compliance with departmental standards.
- Adhere to safety protocols procedures and regulations to maintain a safe working environment for oneself and others including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
- Maintain accurate records documentation and reporting related to vehicle inspections route assignments mileage and service activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
