Description

Under general supervision to perform a variety of technical specialized and responsible library tasks in support of division activities such as Adult Services and Childrens services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Library Specialist I
This is the entry level position in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the position at the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since thisclass is often used as a training classification employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Exercises no supervision.

Library Specialist II
This is the full journey-level in the classification series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the position I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this classification series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the position I level requiring three years of experience at the I level successful performance budget availability and management recommendation. When filled from the outside the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

Examples of Duties

Examples of duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist at the circulation desk charging materials out and in.
  • Receive and process information for the library card issue.
  • Receive and account for fines and fees paid.
  • Design create and prepare library displays promoting library collections and programs.
  • Ensure that the Library is in good orderly condition and fix problems or report to maintenance.
  • Ensure that materials are shelved in proper order and stored properly.
  • Evaluate identify and select new material to be ordered through review media and selection sources.
  • Review new books received and verify correct processing and cataloging.
  • Refer and recommend books to patrons based on knowledge experience and request.
  • Maintain various files and compile reading lists and bibliographies.
  • Assign routine tasks and provide technical assistance to clerical and part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Provide direct assistance to patrons in person and on the phone regarding directional and locational reference help.
  • Refer patrons to proper reference tools to do their own reference searches.
  • Assist and instruct adult and young readers in the use of the automated card catalog and other location tools.
  • Research requests by author and title to determine if the book is in the library collection.
  • Participate in preparing and developing the library reference index.
  • Evaluate and choose items of interest and historical perspective for retention in permanent files.
  • Process and display daily newspapers and magazines for patron use.
  • Retrieve magazines newspapers and microfilms from the storage area as requested by patrons.
  • Conduct sophisticated research for patrons and staff including the use of electronic search tools.
  • Sort and evaluate assigned collection for weeding mending and/or expansion of holdings.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of library events and activities.
  • Assist in locating books and magazines to patrons throughout the library including the Young Readers Room.
  • Assist with special youth services including telling stories to children and developing childrens programs and ;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience :
Library Specialist I

  • Some previous library experience in a specialized field such as childrens services reference or cataloging.
Library Specialist II
  • Three years of library experience in a specialized field such as childrens services or adult services.

Education :
Library Specialist I/II
  • A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university. For degrees obtained outside of the U.S. an official equivalency evaluation is required.
Licenses and Certificates:
Library Specialist I/II
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid appropriate California drivers license upon appointment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Essential functions require the following physical abilities and work environment:

  • Ability to work in a standard office or library environment;
  • Ability to frequently talk hear stand sit carry stoop reach grasp lift up to 10 pounds and perform repetitive motion;
  • Ability to occasionally push pull kneel crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work varying hours including evenings Monday through Sunday.
