Job Description

We have an opening for a Supervisor or Senior Supervisor in the Advanced Coatings and Vacuum Process Lab (AC-VPL). This position requires a current DOE Q clearance at the time of hire. You will provide direct administrative supervision including personnel management of both exempt and non-exempt technical employees as well as personnel actions such as selection promotions training performance evaluations salary recommendations and corrective actions.  Working closely with the Division Superintendent the selected candidate will be responsible for organizing training and cost-effectively utilizing the workforce maintaining equipment and materials and supporting the service centers financial model. This includes but is not limited to long-term planning budgeting and financial projections.  Other responsibilities include ES&H compliance code or standards regulation compliance and working on complex to highly complex technical projects. You will be responsible for solving technical and logistical issues related to various aspects of vacuum technology and thin film development.  This position is in the Materials and NDE Section (MNDE) of the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will 

  • Provide daily technical leadership mentoring and supervision of the work center/teams including work planning setting priorities and assigning daily work assignments.
  • Provide technical guidance and training for Thin Film Development using Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) including Magnetron Sputtering Electron Beam Deposition and Atomic Layer Deposition systems as well as selecting proper vacuum technology techniques for system operations.
  • Provide safety and security oversight for work center activities.
  • Assist in the development of yearly cost and collection estimates for the work center and provide budgetary oversight of work center activities.
  • Interact with program leads facility managers technical contacts engineers and scientists to provide technical support and ensure the timely and cost-effective execution of work center activities.
  • Analyze and interpret complex administrative and technical information as well as project objectives and translate them into job requirements and concepts implementing solutions and alternate approaches to solve complex problems.
  • Make decisions using a high degree of independent discretion and judgment and resolve multi-project and program requirements through negotiations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the 390.2 level

  • Provide highly advanced technical expertise advice and direction to technicians making frequent decisions using a high degree of independent discretion and judgment relating to thin film vacuum systems thin film coating processes and associated support hardware.
  • Participate in and/or lead formal design review processes.
  • Provide highly advanced technical support in thin film analysis and material characterization.

Qualifications :

  • Hold and maintain an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelors degree in engineering technology or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience working with and developing thin film coatings and vacuum systems assembly including metrology materials characterization and data acquisition and analysis.
  • Demonstrated advanced written and verbal communication feedback and presentation skills in specific technical areas.
  • Experience with budget planning and oversight workload assignments and anticipating programmatic needs.
  • Advanced administrative and organizational skills include the use of computers and software such as MS-Word Excel PowerPoint and similar applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and effectively lead a multidisciplinary team with a commitment to engineering and technical excellence customer service quality efficiency cost and schedule.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in a high-consequence safety environment including solving complex problems in a multi-tasked environment often with minimal instruction and supervision.

Additional qualifications at the 390.2 level

  • Significant experience with highly advanced analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Extensive experience with highly advanced skills and understanding of thin film coating technologies and processes with the ability to diagnose complex diagnostic systems.
  • Highly advanced written and verbal communication feedback and presentation skills in multiple technical areas.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Supervisory experience including performance and personnel management.
