Job Description

Position: Track Laborer


Overview:
Works with crews to maintain repair and replace railroad track structures and other railroad assets. Uses hand tools and machines (spike mauls tie tongs track wrenches and jack hammers) to accomplish assigned tasks. Lifts and carries track material performs basic plumbing and structural repairs and clears right-of-way of vegetation and litter. May also be required to operate track machines and drive company vehicles.


Job Requirements:
Work is physically demanding
Laborers must be able to work outdoors in all weather situations
Track maintenance experience preferred
Remove and replace railroad ties pulling and driving spikes and shoveling ballast
Must be able to drive spikes with a spike maul
At least one (1) year of satisfactory outdoor machine operator laborer or apprentice laborer experience
Must be able to work on feet for up to ten (10) hours per day
Must have mechanical aptitude good physical strength and endurance and good interpersonal skills when interacting with supervisors fellow employees and others
Must have basic structural repair and construction skills that will be evaluated through testing
Must be willing to be headquartered in Hurley MS or Moss Point MS as determined by seniority


Working Conditions:
Irregular hours including nights weekends and holidays
Ability to walk on all types of uneven surfaces
24/7 operation; respond to unexpected or emergency situations
Lift up to 75 lbs.


Technical Skills/Other Requirements:
Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment
Knowledge and understanding of work equipment and mechanics of them
Read and understand written instruction as well as understand and retain oral instruction
Ability to communicate clear and effectively
Must be able to understand and follow the General Code of Operating Rules
Safety oriented
Eighteen (18) years of age
High School Graduate or GED
FRA pre-employment drug physical vision and hearing test; subject to random FRA testing
Background check
Valid Drivers License and satisfactory driving record


Experience Relevant to Position (preferred but not required to apply):
Welding certificates or experience heavy outdoor maintenance work experience in grounds maintenance structure maintenance heavy equipment operation railroad maintenance experience prior licensing for positions in the truck airline or rail industry military service. Valid Class A Commercial Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record is preferred.
