Duties & Responsibilities:

(NOTE:** denotes Essential Functions)

1. **Understand and conduct standard operating procedures for water quality analyses following approved methods including but not limited to:
  1. Dissolved and total nutrients
  2. Total suspended solids
  3. Biological oxygen demand
2. **Prepares labs for annual safety inspections by EHSO which includes ensuring all emergency eye and showers are flushed refrigerators and incubators are labeled with Biohazard signs locked if needed and all chemicals are labeled.
3. **Work with the University of Hawaii Maui College (UHMC)faculty to provide educational experiences and research opportunities for students
4. **Supervise students and staff who work in the laboratory and ensure proper training for laboratory safety andstandard operating procedures (SOPs).
5. **Work with community industry and government partners on water quality testing needs
6. **Ensure proper waste management and comply with the guidelines of the UH Environmental Health and Safety Office
7. **Oversee quality control and quality assessment of data generated by the water quality labto include:
  1. Ensure tests on samples meet quality standards
  2. Document results and assess quality control measures for accuracy completeness and reasonableness of data
  3. Coordinate and manage troubleshooting and corrective/preventative actions
  4. Operate maintain and calibrate equipment
8. **Build a clientele to generate a sustainable program and lab
9. **IdentifySOPfor new water quality analyses
10. **Responsible for allwater qualitypurchases procurement and financial transactions(e.g. University Purchasing Card Kuali financial systeminvoicesSuper Quotes and RCUH)
11. **Oversee and manage the budget of the water quality lab
12. Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Professional Work Experience
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Chemistry Biology or Environmental Sciences or related field and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for laboratory work; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  1. Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of Water Quality Analysis as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standards and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  2. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with Water Quality Analysis
  3. Demonstrated ability to resolve a wide range of complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  4. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  1. Demonstratedability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  2. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software including Microsoft Office (Word Excel and PowerPoint)
