Collections Specialist
Office of Student Accounts
Non-Exempt Contingent II 100% Full-Time Grade 11
Job Location: Hybrid - Adelphi MD
University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is seeking a Collections Specialist in the Office of Student Accounts (OSA). Reporting to the Supervisor of Collections the Collections Specialist performs tasks related to the collection and final resolution of student receivables and ensure all transactions are processed in accordance with UMUC State and Federal policies and procedures while adhering to the OSA quality assurance standards.
Hours for this position are Monday through Friday 8:30 am 5:00 pm EST.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Discusses account information with responsible parties via phone email and tickets analyzes accounts to determine accuracy initiates adjustments and contacts appropriate department/agency
Responds to student inquiries in a timely and accurate manner
Provide financial information regarding payment responsibilities and assists students with arranging methods of liquidating past due account balances; proactively researches students addresses and telephone numbers using available collection tools and resources
Gathers information and prepares documentation to refer accounts to the collection agency and when necessary contacts debtors and communicates need for payment
Ensures payments are properly applied to student accounts makes decisions regarding requests for deviations from the expected payment terms
Responds to incoming correspondence
Keys information into the accounts receivable system and is responsible for maintaining audit trails
Perform other job-related duties as assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED
A minimum of four (4) years related experience in customer service or financial operations
General knowledge of collections techniques and the laws pertaining to debt collection; working knowledge of techniques used in collecting compiling and organizing data and information; and knowledge of office equipment software and its application
Must have ability to apply basic analytical skills; perform mathematical computations; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships
Demonstrated computer literacy skills specifically with Microsoft Excel
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
Knowledge and experience using PeopleSoft
Knowledge and experience of Salesforce or similar CRM software
Knowledge of ticketing systems to communicate with students
Knowledge and familiarity with ACD/Queue groups are preferred

Retirement Stipend: Contingent II employees receive a retirement stipend equal to 7.25 percent of their base salary and are eligible to contribute to a supplemental retirement account (SRA).
Supplemental Retirement Plans: include 401(k) 403(b) 457(b) and various Roth options. The university does not provide subsidies or matching funds.
Tuition Remission: CII employees are eligible immediately for Tuition Remission at UMGC or at University of Maryland College Park. Spouses and dependent children are eligible for undergraduate tuition remission after two years of service. NOTE: For part-time employees (at least 50 percent of the time) tuition remission benefits are prorated.
