Reporting directly to a Sergeant III at a multi-custody male correctional facility this position is responsible for ensuring the care custody and control of offenders (Transportation Section) and functions as the Officer-in-Charge of a group of offenders during transfer and work activities. Other responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Exercising independent decision-making within established policies and procedures due to the physical separation from supervisory personnel.
- Involving the direction of other officers during these work details and transfer operations.
- Providing custody supervision for an offender housed in the segregation facility including Intensive Control Administrative Segregation and Disciplinary Segregation.
- Enforcing rules and regulations for safety health and protection of offenders.
- Performing searches of persons places and objects.
- Responding at any time to emergency calls within the segregation facility.
- Performing rescue functions to include CPR basic first aid physically removing people from dangerous areas and using fire equipment to including fire hoses extinguishers and breathing apparatuses.
- Establishing and maintaining control of violent or uncooperative offenders.
- Being able to defend oneself or others against violent attacks.
- Apprehending escaped/fleeing offenders to include running jumping climbing crawling using reasonable physical force to include deadly force.
- Loading unloading aiming and firing handguns shotguns and rifles at the level of proficiency required.
- Maintaining a professional demeanor at all times to include times of mental and verbal abuse by offender.
As of January 1 2025 there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission effective January 1 2025. The new salary range will be $41558 - $54078.
Note to Current State Employees:
The salary grade for this position is CR07(Salary Range: $41558 - $54078). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.
While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diplomaAND two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum Education and Experience for a Trainee Appointment: High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
