Job Description

EMERGENCY VEHICLE TECHNICIAN

CLOSES ON FRIDAY AUGUST 8 AT 5:00 P.M.

REPORTS TO: Fleet Maintenance Supervisor
DIVISION: Support Services
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
SALARY GRADE:14

SALARY RANGE: $78409 - $92422

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) performs skilled and technical work required for the repair of automotive and fire suppression equipment and fire apparatuses in a manner consistent with organizational values. The EVT uses independent judgment to diagnose repair and perform maintenance tasks on a variety of equipment. This position is deemed essential to SMFRs daily operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the position and do not list every duty that may be required of the employee for this position. Performs vehicle apparatus small gas diesel and electrical equipment repair; performs maintenance repair and annual testing as scheduled by the Fleet Services Bureau including operating hand and electric/air operated power tools with specialty instruments as required.

Performs repairs annual testing and maintenance work in but not limited to the following areas: hydraulic and air brakes; ABS; gas and diesel engines; advanced electrical and on-board computers; fuel delivery; hydraulics; transmissions; air systems; exhaust axles and suspensions; fire pumps; foam systems and aerial ladder equipment; assists with performing and maintaining records of NFPA fire equipment and apparatus tests.

Performs welding cutting and fabrication of steel stainless plastic aluminum and wood for body repairs apparatus refurbishment upfit needs and general repairs; utilizes oxygen/acetylene torches and plasma cutter.

Performs plumbing repairs pipefitting/fabrication and maintenance work of fire pumps on apparatuses.

Performs custom upholstery projects and repair as needed.

Responds to emergency calls to and outside the fleet facility in all weather conditions and performs vehicle and apparatus services on an on-call basis.

Drives all SMFR apparatuses and vehicles to test for diagnosis after repairs; delivers and obtains necessary equipment.

Records daily time materials and labor for recordkeeping and cost tracking purposes.

Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with departments and other government agencies.

Attends training to improve skills and knowledge for repair annual testing and maintenance of fire and emergency apparatuses.

Recommends and provides training as it relates to operations of fleet equipment for end users including fluid adjustments DOT/Safety inspections and minor maintenance.

Performs installation and troubleshooting of emergency related warning equipment including lighting controls sirens cameras electronic locks and Opticom.

Performs installation and repair of radio communication systems antennas GPS equipment in vehicles of all types.

Performs heavy vehicle upfitting and modifying to numerous makes and models of vehicles which includes but is not limited to electrical systems wiring harnesses charging systems etc.

Maintains detailed records on including maintenance/repair records emissions testing and safety checklists in a computer software system.

Verifies and inspects proper repairs completed on apparatus sent to outside vendors.

Performs related work as assigned by supervisor which may include evening and weekend assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS (An equivalent combination of education training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position is qualifying.)

High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) is required. Associate degree in automotive/Diesel Technology field is preferred.

Four (4) years of Journeyman experience as Mechanic/Technician.

Must be able to obtain and maintain certification as an EVT level I Fire Apparatus or Ambulance within one (1) year from the date of hire.

Must obtain Colorado Smog Certification within one (1) year from date of hire.

Possess and maintain a valid Colorado Drivers license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with the SMFRs Driving Records Policy.

CDL is preferred.

Must obtain CPR Certification within one (1) year of hire

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be a self-motivated with the ability to follow directions elevate problems and prioritize tasks.

Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

Skill in attention to detail and observance of all safety related requirements.

Knowledge and skill in providing excellent customer service.

Ability to make high level decisions in the absence of the authority having jurisdiction.

Must be able to maintain a clean and safe work environment in and out of shop.

Must have a personal hand-tool set sufficient to perform duties.

Skill in reading shop manuals and schematics used in troubleshooting fire and emergency apparatus and related equipment.

Skill in advanced vehicle repair and maintenance.

Skill in communication and interpersonal skills daily as applied to interaction with coworkers supervisor firefighters the public etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Knowledge of advanced mechanical procedures and practices.

Ability to understand Federal DOT/FMCSA Standards & NFPA Standards.

Knowledge and experience in braking systems for light and heavy-duty vehicles.

Knowledge of drive train components (both light and heavy duty) and understanding of dangers associated with using substitute parts or procedures to short cut repairs.

Knowledge of mechanical tools and equipment necessary for repairing fire and emergency apparatus and related equipment.

Ability to drive emergency apparatus.

Ability to flex days off for rotating on call schedule for operational needs and emergency repairs to include nights weekends and holidays as well as 24/7 response to call outs.

Must be able to work Saturdays.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works directly under the supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor and Lead Technician and generally under the Fleet Services Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

EQUIPMENT and SYSTEMS

Requires frequent use of equipment including a personal computer (including various software packages database and spreadsheet programs) automobile repair tools SMFR vehicles specialized equipment related to firefighting and apparatuses including nozzles and appliances hydraulic jacks ladders portable radios and other firefighting equipment calculators telephones facsimile machines copy machines printers and other general office equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to perform climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting fingering grasping feeling talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions. Requires nimbleness of hands for typing and writing. May be required to exert more than 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or more than 50 pounds of force frequently and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust his or her focus allowing a broad field of vision.

Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the safe operation of a vehicle during normal as well as hazardous weather situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND GENERAL INFORMATION

While performing the duties of this job the employee works in a facility specifically designed for light and heavy-duty vehicle maintenance functions and outside in all weather conditions as required for specialty work and road calls.

Exposure to work near moving mechanical parts electrical systems hazardous materials firefighting foam fumes airborne particles and moderate to loud noise levels. Appropriate PPE gear must be worn as required.
