Job Description

ABOUT THE POSITION



The Riverside University Health System-Correctional Health Services (RUHS-CHS) is currently recruiting for an experiencedSupervisingInstitutional Nursefor the Robert Presley Detention Center..

Under general direction and in accordance with the State of California Nurse Practice Act assigns supervises and provides professional nursing care for individuals detained at a Riverside County Sheriff/Probation confinement or correctional facility; and performs other related duties as required.

The Supervising Institutional Nurse is the supervising level classification in the Institutional Nurse series receiving medical direction from physicians and reporting administratively to either the Correctional Healthcare Administrator or management staff in charge of the institution. Incumbents are assigned to the Riverside University Health System-Correctional Health Services (RUHS-CHS) and have charge of nursing services at one or more adult correctional facility and/or Probation Juvenile Hall/Program. This class is responsible for supervising Institutional Nurses Licensed Vocational Nurses and for the 24/7 operations of multiple inmate/juvenile nursing units.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Plan organize supervise and provide professional nursing care to individuals in an adult correctional facility and/or Probation Juvenile Hall/Program; supervise the conduct of physical examinations; review and control medical records; ensure staff compliance with policies procedures and with the State of California Title 15 licensure regulations.

Review and evaluate treatment standards and nursing management to ensure patients are receiving correct and adequate care that meets the Title 15 minimum requirements.

Review charts for physicians orders and supervise their implementation; confer with physicians regarding the care and condition of patients; make decisions to transfer patients to the medical center for diagnosis or treatment.

Supervise the procurement and maintenance of medications and medical supplies; supervise the administration of treatments and medications to patients; orient and train employees in medical and recordkeeping procedures.

Evaluate the performance of subordinates; interview applicants for employment and make hiring recommendations; ensure staff compliance with policies procedures and with the State of California Title 15 regulations.

Answer inquiries of family members concerning the medical condition and treatment of individuals in custody; counsel and advise patients and their families regarding medical problems and healthcare methods.

Recommend nursing policies to institutional administrators; ensure conformance of nursing services provided at the various facilities with healthcare standards established by the State of California; collaborate with the Correctional Healthcare Medical Director physicians correctional officers and other correctional facility supervisors to ensure quality patient care and cost efficient and effective facility operations.

May prepare and submit documented incident reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Successful completion of the education required by the State of California to obtain a valid license and certification. A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in nursing is preferred. (Additional qualifying experience may substitute for up to a maximum of two years of education on the basis of one year of full-time experience being equal to 30 semester or 45 quarter units.)

Experience: Four years of full time experience as an institutional nurse or registered nurse preferably in an acute care hospital or healthcare agency two years of which included charge or senior level responsibility.

Knowledge of: The principles techniques and procedures used in professional nursing; the principles of supervision and basic management skills; team building and conflict management; licensure accreditation and regulatory requirements; the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics; principles and techniques used in the treatment of contagious diseases including HIV and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Ability to: Plan organize and supervise the work of professional nurses and support personnel; perform the entire range of professional nursing duties and responsibilities; work under limited medical direction; prepare and maintain concise and complete medical records and reports; establish and maintain effective relationships with physicians detainees and co-workers.
