Salary Range:

$43571.00-$55176.00 Yearly. Individuals new to state service start at the minimum of the pay plan.

State of Connecticut University of Connecticuts Student Union and Event Services department has two openings for a Lead Custodian: 2nd Shift (3 pm - 11 pm) Friday-Tuesday and 3rd Shift (11 pm - 7 am) Monday-Friday at the Storrs Campus. These are permanent full-time 37.5 hours/week positions. Working under the Evening and Weekends Events and Operations Coordinator the successful candidate is accountable for acting as a lead custodian for a staff of four to nine custodians and the full range of basic tasks in cleaning and maintenance of the Student Union building.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. The individual in this role must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights weekends holidays).

PURPOSES OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

Is accountable for acting as a lead custodian for a staff of four to nine custodians and the full range of basic tasks in cleaning and maintenance of the Student Union building. This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plans crew workflow and determines priorities; schedules assigns oversees and reviews work; establishes and maintains crew procedures; provides staff training and assistance; conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; acts as liaison with operating units agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; may make recommendations on policies or standards; may prepare reports and correspondence; ensures supplies and equipment for crew are adequate by reporting shortage to supervisor; performs full range of duties as outlined in Custodian class specification; performs duties as related.

UConn Student Union Duties and Responsibilities

Supervises custodial staff; generates work flow and determines priorities; schedules assigns oversees and reviews work; provides staff training; assists in conducting performance evaluations; ensures supplies and equipment are adequate by reporting shortages to supervisor; makes recommendations of policies and procedures; prepare reports and correspondence; dusts mops sweeps scrubs strips waxes and polishes floors using appropriate equipment such as buffers floor scrubbers and extractors; washes dusts and polishes glass including windows woodwork and walls furniture and metal equipment; collects and disposes of trash and performs recycling as instructed; reports needs for repairs performs minor maintenance; runs errands; inspects building for damage and reports conditions to supervisor for action; changes light bulbs lubricate door hinges drawers or cabinets etc.; removes snow and ice from stairways and walkways applying sand and salt as needed around the Student Union building; moves furniture and/or set-up meeting rooms for events; performs other duties as needed.

KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of building custodial work and related equipment.

Skills: interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.

Ability to operate care for and perform maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work such as automatic scrubbers high-speed buffers and cleaning solutions.

Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in work that could reasonably be expected to provide knowledge skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with cleaning in an educational setting. Ability to read meeting and event diagrams to complete room set-ups (including staging tables and chairs).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength stamina physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical exam is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
