Job Description

Department Overview

The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is integral to the healthcare education and research missions at OHSU. We provide clinical services at OHSU hospitals and collaborate with the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System (VA) Hillsboro Medical Center and Adventist Health. Our vision in the Pre-Operative Medicine Clinic (PMC) is to work as a clinic-wide team to partner with our multidisciplinary partners at OHSU to serve the diverse peri-operative/peri-procedural needs of patients across the Pacific Northwest to provide high-quality patient-centered care and opportunities for optimization that enhance the entire peri-operative/peri-procedural experience.

Function/Duties of Position

At 1.0 cFTE a faculty member is expected to complete 360 sessions per year (eight sessions/week x 45 weeks). As a provider in the Preoperative Medicine Clinic the physician will assure the safe efficient high quality and customer-oriented management of patient care for identified patient populations including but not limited to completing a comprehensive assessment of the patients status; developing monitoring and revising as appropriate an evidence-based treatment plan that addresses diagnoses patterns of disease risk factors and treatment alternatives; treat many common acute and chronic health problems; interpret diagnostic tests prescribe and manage medications and other therapies provide health teaching with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and refer patients to other healthcare professionals as necessary. The PMC physician performs preoperative risk assessment on pre- surgical patients by obtaining an H&P and ordering appropriate diagnostic studies and laboratory tests. They will collaborate with other members of the team regarding pre-op instructions medication management and patient education.

The physician is expected to function independently but also work in close collaboration with providers from other departments (cardiology anesthesiology internal medicine etc.) to coordinate medical optimization of the patient prior to surgery. This includes but is not limited to following up on lab tests cardiac testing referrals to other specialties and documenting plan of care in EMR. Physicians also communicates with the surgical team (surgeons surgery schedulers) when necessary to share concerns about patient readiness for scheduled surgeries. Timely focused documentation with the referring surgeon PCP and anesthesiologist when appropriate to ensure quality patient care. The physician will review the patients history via patients verbal report and the review of previous medical records from internal and external sources and perform a complete physical exam on each patient- including but not limited to auscultation of the heart and lungs. Consistent patient education about good preparation for surgery. Documentation in the EMR of the clinical assessment will be executed according to documentation standards for licensed providers at OHSU. Chart documentation will be accurate and timely.

Work closely with APPs in PMC. Serve as a resource to other providers and staff in PMC including APPs MAs RNs and PAS. Serve as attending of record for residents or students receiving educational instruction in PMC.

The faculty member will be expected to participate in continuing education professional and faculty development and scholarship as directed by their department.

Required Qualifications

  • MD/DO degree (or equivalent)

  • Board certification or board eligibility is required

  • Oregon Medical License or eligibility

  • Demonstrated commitment to educational excellence in a clinical setting is required

  • Advanced training in medical education is highly desirable
