Background
The UK Higher Education sector is changing in response to the shifts in the capacity availability and opportunity offered by an ever-advancing range of digital technologies. The expectations of students and staff are changing continually. Technology-Integrated Learning is now an integral part of the overall student-teaching experience of their education.
To support the Universitys ambitions to be a place of transformative education the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) houses its own educational technology team tasked to support and enhance laboratory-based learning experiences.
Department overview
The Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) at the University of Birmingham is a state-of-the-art 40 million investment in STEM education encompassing cutting-edge facilities and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Opened in October 2018 the CTL main building houses three laboratories: a wet lab dry lab and e-lab in addition to the CTL Biolabs and CTL Engineering sister laboratories.
Supporting schools across two colleges Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) and Life and Environmental Sciences (LES). The CTL EdTech Teams purpose is to enhance laboratory teaching by combining practical activities with innovative uses of educational technology.
Role Summary
Based in the CTLs Educational Technology Team this post will play a crucial role in creating and implementing innovative educational resources for various STEM disciplines. The primary responsibility will be to design develop and build engaging interactive digital learning materials such as bespoke interactives videos and other educational media. Using online and blended pedagogies the role will collaborate with academics to build outstanding learning experiences that meet CTLs and the institutions wider digital education objectives.
Secondary to this the role is expected to assist in the administration and potential development of existing products and systems. One key tool will be Mobius an online assessment tool for STEM.
Success in this position requires strong technical expertise in developing digital learning resources excellent communication skills the ability to manage multiple projects effectively and creativity. At the CTL you will contribute to shaping STEM education by leveraging technology to create transformative and engaging learning experiences for students.
Main Duties
The role will provide crucial development expertise in the creation of educational media. Working closely with academics you will identify key aspects of their teaching methods and content to ensure the creation of tailored learning experiences. By employing online and blended learning methodologies you will collaborate with academics to design and deliver exceptional learning experiences that align with the CTLs objectives.
- Work independently and alongside colleagues from across the CTL its family of partner schools and the wider institutional teams such as the Digital Education Team to make best use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas and other relevant tools (including where appropriate in the creation of online courses and in-lab experiences).
- Create learning objects and course content as required (with input from subject expert staff).
- Liaise with content development specialists (internal or 3rd party) where appropriate to design high-quality innovative learning objects and activities to be used within lab-based courses.
- Manage the CTLs bank of Mbius online worksheets. This includes promptly responding to queries and requests for edits implementing fixes and creating new material when appropriate. (Training will be provided).
- Assist and support the running of the CTLsannualEdTech Intern scheme.
- Maintain and update existing edtech content ensuring it meets accessibility needs.
- Contribute to the development of new teaching resources and methods.
- Participate in and contribute to activities and projects aligned with both the CTL EdTech Team and Digital Education Teams broader goals.
- Promote equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
- Support the Universitys sustainability agenda through resource-efficient working.
- Fulfil any other duties commensurate with the grade.
Required Knowledge Skills Qualifications Experience
Essential:
- Educated to Degree level(or equivalent qualifications) or relevant technical qualification and relevant experience - where no equivalent qualification is held extensive proven practical and technical experiencein a similar role will be required.
- Ability to think analytically to apply skills and knowledge in new contexts and to problem solve by thinking beyond traditional solutions.
- Resilience and adaptability to work effectively in new environments and with a diverse range of people at different levels of the organisation.
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy.
- Proven experience in content development skills in industry-standard packages such as Articulate Storyline or similar.
- Extensive proven practical experience in instructional/learning design in the context of higher education and a broad disciplinary area.
- Ability to quickly become a product specialist for new digital education systems.
- Specialist knowledge of how Virtual Learning Environments (such as Canvas) and other associated systems can be used to support learning and teaching.
- Extensive proven practical experience in a relevant scientific technical or IT specialism.
- Ability to prioritise negotiate use own judgement and possess a resourceful and self-motivating approach.
- Ability to analyse problems and summarise key points to others including non-specialist staff.
- Experience of delivering face-to-face and remote training ideally in the use of learning technologies.
- Understanding of stakeholder requirements to ensure solutions are developed to meet their needs.
- Ability to work independently accurately and to deadlines within a team environment.
- Ability to provide specific support and advice challenging and reinterpreting requests where it is necessary.
- Experience supporting projects from conception to successful completion.
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy with the ability to write clearly and to analyse information and data.
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Desirable:
- A degree or PhD in a STEM subject.
- Experience of working with academic staff ideally in the use of learning technologies in a blended learning environment.
- Experience in teaching or developing educational resources for undergraduates and a desire to understand the student perspective of formative and summative assessment.
- Experience in coding though the specific language and methodology will be taught.
- Media creation skills (able to film & edit using Premier Pro Final Cut or similar) for professional finish.
- Demonstrable interest in game development and the use of immersive technologies (e.g. virtual reality augmented reality XR).
