TITLE
Accountant III
JOB SUMMARY
Performs highly professional tasks in the area of accounting control and reporting. Requires an in-depth knowledge of principles and practices within a specific area of higher education accounting in accordance with GASB standards. Work is substantially complex and varied. Independent thought and judgement are required as well as personal initiative in completing required and assigned tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Accounting Officer & Controller through normal auditing procedures and other internal controls. Performance evaluation is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Chief Accounting Officer & Controller
Supervises: May lead a team of Accountants for assigned projects
ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include but not limited to the following:
Maintains accounting records utilizing the University and Foundation accounting systems.
Performs general ledger account maintenance.
Audits accounts for accuracy and compliance with University State and Federal guidelines.
Performs critical reconciliations which directly impact University and Foundation financial operations.
Provides accountability for outstanding items and is responsible for resolving outstanding issues in a timely manner.
Prepares journal entries and initiates corrections or adjustment entries as necessary.
Provides assistance to University and Foundation employees in handling financial operating issues.
Prepares routine and specialized financial reports in multiple accounting systems.
Prepares tax returns and other reports required for statutory compliance.
Assists compilation and or preparation of information for the annual financial reporting (AFR) as assigned.
Assists internal and external audits as assigned.
Ensures compliance with internal controls.
Provides assistance in preparation of Schedules for Annual Financial Report.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Performs a variety of clerical tasks such as filing proofreading and preparing correspondence.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Bachelors degree in accounting or a related area with an emphasis in accounting. Graduate degree or courses preferred. Additional job-related experience may substitute for the required degree.
EXPERIENCE
Four years experience in accounting. Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge is qualifying.
REQUIREMENT
Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to include pronouncements of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
Knowledge of Federal and State guidelines pertaining to financial management of public universities.
Working knowledge of Oracle Quickbooks and Raisers Edge as they pertain to accounting functions.
Ability to analyze accounts statements and other financial information for accuracy completeness and compliance with governing regulations.
Ability to coordinate work with other employees providing direct instruction or supervision as assigned.
Ability to organize work effectively conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with staff faculty students and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively orally by phone in person and in writing.
Ability to represent the department and University in a friendly courteous and professional manner.
Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment including university-related software and email.
Working knowledge of office practices and methods.
