Job Summary
The Manager Medical Surgical Unit is a Registered Nurse who plans facilitates and manages the activities of Med-Surg department. This management role ensures the provision of patient/customer focused care and maximizes the contributions and development of the staff.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage and lead nurses techs and professional staff members in collaboration with the Day shift manager and Associate Chief Nursing Officer. Oversee policies and procedures to guarantee efficient and effective delivery of services and meets regulatory compliance for the department(s).
- Ensure employees understand and adhere to established performance standards.
- Identify issues or problems and appropriately addresses the resolution of conflicts arising from patients their families or conflicts within the care delivery team utilizing negotiation consensus building and or constructive and cohesive advice.
- Promote a sense of team spirit by creating a culture of mutual respect and high-performance expectations among all team members.
- Assist in strategic planning by contributing and implementing best practice standards and facilitating changes with processes or procedures at the department level. Coach and guide the team to continuously seek ways to improve patient care and improve as a team.
- Participate in and conduct annual appraisals. Collaborate and oversee competency requirements are met. Management responsibilities include hiring training and education developing scheduling assigning work and managing performance and retention. Ensure adequate staffing resources are available to care for patient population.
- Assist in financial management activities and budget preparation. With guidance monitors the budget for variances and suggests appropriate opportunities for improvement or correction.
- Collaborate to maintain ISDH ACHC and CMS survey readiness. Gather performance audits review findings and assist in the analysis of performance improvement using various Departmental Systems:
- EMS- Event Management System- Conduct investigations on near misses errors gaps and trends.
- Audits- Conduct quality and performance improvement audits.
- Quality Indicators Analyzes: Infections falls length of stay discharge inspections and other.
- UBC- Unit Based Councils- Participates in special teams and committees to gain knowledge and implement processes for high standards in collaboration with the Director of Inpatient Services.
- Provide direct patient care on an as needed basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
- Minimum: Bachelors of Science in Nursing from an accredited school
Experience Requirements
- Minimum: Five (5) years of clinical medical surgical care in a hospital setting.
- Also Preferred: Three (3) years Management experience in multiple skill levels in a clinical inpatient unit.
License/Certification Requirements
Minimum:
- Registered Nurse valid to practice in the state of Indiana
- Basic Life Safety (American Heart Association)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (American Heart Association)
Preferred: CMSRN certification
Required Experience:
Manager
