Reporting to the EHS Manager the Environmental Specialist will be responsible for leading environmental compliance and driving key sustainability initiatives in the manufacturing setting. As a direct report to the EHS Manager this team member also plays a key role in contributing to Safety compliance and risk reduction.Additionally the Environmental Specialist must adhere to our guiding principles of integrity commitment and excellence.

What will you do

  • Serve as primary point of contact and SME for environmental concerns; provide immediate regulatory guidance for a 24/7 manufacturing operation
  • Prepare and submit regulatory filings required by local state and federal agencies including EPA and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
  • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with Corporate EHS staff contract consultants and regulatory agencies
  • Ensure site maintains environmental compliance with all permits and reporting requirements (Air Water Waste) including management of Title V Air Permit NPDES Storm Water Permit RCRA Waste Management ECUA and Escambia County. Examples are Tier II Reporting TRI GHG Annual Air Operating Report & Emissions Fee Semi-Annual Monitoring Reports ect.
  • Establish sustainable processes in conjunction with Operations (what does that mean)
  • Complete internal reporting requirements in a timely manner
  • Support the EHS Team with 20% Safety support function; serve as back-up for EHS Manager
  • Attend daily site meetings to present Environmental data and request resources as needed
  • Establish and maintain regulatory files in accordance with corporate guidelines
  • Produce effective routine plant communication training and weekly inspections.
  • Identify and execute Environmental and Sustainability improvement opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Environmental Engineering (or related) field
  • 5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting
  • 3 years of environmental reporting experience

  • Demonstrated ability to meet Key Performance Indicators and other Performance Objectives

  • Demonstrated ability to work with production operations in support of compliance and improvement
  • Successful leadership of a small team
  • Proficient computer skills to support compliance reports and plant communication
  • Substantial experience in managing Consultants in support of compliance

About the location (Pensacola FL)

Our Pensacola Plant one of twenty Armstrong plants in North America employs 200 people working on rotating shifts 24/7 in the manufacture and shipment of acoustical ceiling tile to Armstrongs customers worldwide. The Pensacola Plant was originally built in 1929 to produce insulating building material.

Pensacola is the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle. Pensacola is a seaport on Pensacola Bay which is protected by 52 miles of sugar white barrier islands on the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A large United States Naval Air Station the first in the United States is located southwest of the city and is the home of the Blue Angels flight demonstration team and the National Naval Aviation Museum.
