What Youll Do

  • Follows established procedures and processes for performing a single or sequence of operations required in various production and development processes associated with the chemical and physical change of materials.
  • Adjusts regulates controls and operates a wide variety of standard and specialized processes and associated equipment. Uses various measuring and recording equipment and devices to record or transmit data.
  • Maintains detailed records of inventory and process quantities.
  • Must undergo extensive training examination and certification in required areas.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. High School diploma or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following the interim newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)
  • Minimum requirements for levels are delineated as follows:
    • Chemical Operator B: Must have a minimum of one or more of the following:
      • B1) One-year certification or graduating within the current semester from the Roane State Community College Chemical Engineering Technology Certificate Program (or other acknowledged Chemical Engineering Technology program e.g. Chattanooga State Community College); OR
      • B2) Two years hands-on experience in a manufacturing/production environment within a material processing Plant/facility (e.g. chemical metallurgical polymer etc.) with primary job responsibilities in chemical processing (only full-time experience will be considered as qualifying).
        • Examples of hands-on experience may include but are not limited to the following: Chemical processing of solutions in a manufacturing environment such as dissolution precipitation evaporation and/or extraction metal casting supervising any of the above.
        • Required experience must be within the past ten years from the job bid closure date.
      • Progression from Chemical Operator B-level to Chemical Operator A-level requires the following:
        • Candidate must fulfill the current requirements for Chemical Operator B plus the following:
          • Completion of and satisfactory progression through a combination of an additional 15 months classroom training and on-the-job experience in chemical and metallurgical processing areas at Y-12.
    • Chemical Operator A:Must have a minimum of one or more of the following:
      • A1) Associates Degree or graduating within the current semester in Applied Sciences in Chemical Engineering Technology from the Roane State Community College (or other acknowledged Chemical Engineering Technology program e.g. Chattanooga State Community College) along with two years hands-on experience in a manufacturing/production environment within a material processing plant/facility (e.g. chemical metallurgical polymer etc.) Required experience must be within the past ten years from the job bid closure date OR
      • A2) Six years hands-on experience in a manufacturing/production environment within a chemical processing.
        • Plant/facility (e.g. chemical metallurgical polymer etc.) with primary full time job responsibilities in chemical processing (only fulltime experience will be considered as qualifying).
        • Examples of hands-on experience may include but are not limited to the following: Chemical processing of solutions in a manufacturing environment such as dissolution precipitationevaporation and/or extraction;Metal casting;Supervising any of the above.
        • Required experience must be within the past ten years from the job bid closure date;OR
      • A3) A relevant 4-year technical degree or graduating within the current semester in a STEM area such as Chemistry may be considered in lieu of the stated minimum requirements.

Additional Job Requirements

  • Must demonstrate the ability to read write understand and execute oral and written job instructions.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to read and understand procedures work instructions facility postings Safety Datasheets equipment postings and work permits for hazardous materials/conditions.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to read scales and gauges and perform valve manipulations/alignments. Must demonstrate the ability to understand pressures and filtration.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of fundamental chemical principles. (e.g. Understanding of pH measurements/values is required).
  • Must demonstrate the ability to operate test and inspect chemical process equipment within the bounds of written procedures and on-the-job training.
  • Must demonstrate understanding of and the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including Standard and Metric conversions.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to interpret specifications and perform calculations involved in measuring weighing and other operations. Must demonstrate the understanding of and the ability to comply with Conduct of Operations.
  • Must follow regulations related to security health and safety and the environment which may include working in a Material Access Area (MAA) and/or in areas with Beryllium or Radiological contamination. Additionally must be able to work safely around hazardous chemicals and contamination by recognizing hazards and working within specifically defined requirements.
  • The preferred candidate/s will also demonstrate excellent communication skills the ability to work in a team environment and a commitment to quality timeliness safety and security. An ideal candidate will demonstrate a questioning attitude to identify unanticipated and/or abnormal conditions. Experience in Continuous Improvement concepts/applications 5S and Lean principles is desired.
  • Candidate selection consists of skills assessment interview and medical screening.
  • Shift work may be required.
  • This position requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.This position may require entry into materials access areas and participation in the Human Reliability Program.
    • If HRP is required the selection of an individual for this position is conditioned upon his or her successful completion of a counterintelligence-scope polygraph pursuant to 10 CFR 709. This position may require participation in the Beryllium program.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
