An exciting opportunity exists for a Trainee in Addiction Medicine at St Vincents Hospital Sydney for the remainder of the 2025 clinical the framework of the Mission Vision Values and Philosophy of the Mary Aikenhead Ministries as well asthe Policies of St Vincents Hospital the Trainee will provide effective medical services under supervision to patients presenting to St Vincents hospital with substance use disorder of varying severity while developing expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment.

What youll be doing

The successful applicant will work within a multi-disciplinary team to provide both inpatient and outpatient care of patients with the focus of the role being advanced care of the range of substance use disorders focusing on the specialised treatment of drug and alcohol withdrawal and post-withdrawal management.

The position will ideally be able to work effectively across all units of the Alcohol and Drug Service including the opioid treatment program the inpatient unit (Gorman Unit) Consultation Liaison as well as general Outpatient clinics. The position also participates in the after-hours roster as required.


The position is accredited as an advanced training position with the Chapter of Addiction Medicine Royal Australasian College of Physicians for eligible trainees: although all suitably interested and passionate candidates with at least 2 years post graduate experience in Australia will be considered.

Candidates are expected to participate in the Weekend overtime roster for Alcohol and Drug Service

Selection Criteria:

1. MBBS or equivalent currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia

2. Completion of at least of two (2) years postgraduate experience.

3. Demonstrated ability to work in a complex clinical environment demonstrated excellent clinical skills judgement and expertise.

4. Experience and willingness to teach junior medical staff and demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.

5. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement patient safety and risk management; knowledge of relevant NSW Health policy including EEO and OH&S

6. Ability to move between services and geographical locations to deliver patient care and preparedness to participate in after-hours work as required 7.

Preparedness and ability to work independently in a supervised environment. 8.

Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the philosophies mission and values of the Mary Aikenhead Ministries
