Job Description

The MFAHs Department of Learning and Interpretation develops programs materials and other opportunities that engage intergenerational audiences and students with the Museums collections and exhibitions of world art. The Museums school tour program is administered through the Object-based Learning area of Learning and Interpretation. Led by highly trained volunteer docents over 35000 students and chaperones participate in docent-led tours each year. The docent corps consists of 110 volunteers who lead gallery experiences for K-12 students that encourage visitors of all ages to respond to and reflect on original works of art in the Museums permanent collection and exhibitions.

Working collaboratively with the Tour Programs Assistant the school tour greeter is the primary day-of contact for K-12 guided and self-guided tours for teachers docents and bus drivers. This position works to ensure that students teachers and docents have support and organization for each guided and self-guided school tour and the program is functioning at a high level of logistical organization and hospitality. The school-tour greeter acts as the liaison to other MFAH front line staff including guest services security and group sales.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the day to day operations of the school tour program including organizing of groups at the bus drop off location in lobby and sculpture garden for school tours
  • Greets and coordinates school tours for each arrival and departure
  • Maintain communication within the Museum (Docents Security Guest Services Membership) regarding daily updates to school tour program
  • Check in school groups & record any changes to number of students teachers & chaperones
  • Assists lead teachers and docents to create seamless experience for students
  • Go over rules and expectations with school groups before the start of their tour
  • Prep teacher/chaperone badges school visit packets & group numbers for school tour visits
  • Help pull school bins for lunches water bottles backpacks and bags
  • Distributes tour materials to teachers and chaperones

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to work well in a team environment take initiative and problem solve.
  • Ability to provide front-line customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks working effectively and efficiently under pressure and paying great attention to detail.
  • Positive sense of humor and ability to remain calm when working with large groups of students and volunteers.
  • Empathetic and persuasive communication skills
  • Able to interact with a diverse group of people from a wide variety of ethnic cultural and economic backgrounds including students teachers docents and museum staff at all levels
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) desired

Education and Experience:

  • Previous customer service work experience highly valued
  • Some college preferred
