About the Role

As part the Decision Sciences team you will be responsible for the design development and maintenance of decision science products that are impactful efficient and sustainable. These tools enable smarter safer and sustainable decisions across our global operations.

The decision science product portfolio needs to deliver measurable value be easy to maintain and align with BHP values. You will be required to work across industrial problem solving advanced analytics complex mathematics and software engineering to shape a portfolio of products that support both operational excellence and long-term strategy of our stakeholders.
We are looking for a seasoned professional with deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: dynamic simulation and digital twins mathematical optimisation machine learning data analytics and full-stack software development. Experience in mining heavy industry or large-scale systems modelling is highly valued.

Reporting to the Decision Sciences Product Owner your key accountabilities will include:

  • Designing and delivering impactful digital solutions that address complex challenges in mine planning supply chain and innovation across BHPs operations.
  • Shaping and implementing sustainable technology solutions that contribute to product development and unlock measurable value for assets.
  • Leading the full software lifecycle from requirements gathering and design through to implementation deployment and long-term maintenance with a focus on low total cost of ownership.
  • Developing large-scale algorithms using simulation optimisation and/or machine learning to support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Researching and prototyping next-generation technologies in applied mathematics and computer science to advance the teams technical capabilities.
  • Translating complex insights into intuitive visualisations that empower stakeholders to make smarter safer and sustainable decisions.
  • Applying Agile engineering practices and modern software development tools to rapidly build test and iterate on high-quality solutions.
  • Collaborating with internal technology teams to manage technical dependencies and ensure seamless integration within BHPs broader technology ecosystem.

About You

This role will suit someone who enjoys who enjoys solving complex real-world problems and building reliable maintainable digital solutions. You understand the purpose behind a product can work through the technical detail and take satisfaction in delivering tools that are both useful and used.

You thrive in a team that values intellectual rigour practical problem solving and collaboration across disciplines. The environment is fast-paced and delivery-focused grounded in shared purpose and mutual respect.

You will be working across a portfolio of mature object-oriented software products. We are looking for someone who can step into existing systems understand how they work and improve them thoughtfully. A mindset of engineering discipline sustainability and respect for legacy systems is essential.

  • A background in applied mathematics computer science or a similar quantitative field with experience in large-scale industrial applications. Masters or PhD qualifications will be highly regarded
  • At least 3 years of relevant R&D experience including working with external contractors
  • Experience developing and maintaining production-grade software and internal tools
  • Strong skills in object-oriented programming (e.g. Python C# C Java)
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (preferably AWS)
  • Experience with Agile practices including test-driven development
  • A pragmatic approach to technology selection and system design
  • Experience with version control peer review and collaborative development workflows
  • Proficiency with relational databases and ORMs (e.g. SQL LINQ Entity Framework DevExpress XPO)
  • Experience supporting production systems including monitoring and alerting
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools CI/CD pipelines and performance-focused development
