Data Engineering Manager
The data that powers decisions. The platforms that help shape the future. The systems that keep everything running. As Data Engineering Manager youll lead the team making all of that possible.
Data underpins every part of Northern from train performance and timetabling to customer experience finance and innovation. Reporting into the Head of Data and Analytics youll be at the heart of that transformation continuing to modernise and invest in smarter more connected digital systems.
What youll be doing
Youll head up a growing team of data engineers providing the leadership and strategic direction to design build and maintain secure and scalable data systems. That means taking ownership of our data engineering roadmap translating business needs into technical solutions and making sure everything is aligned with wider IT and digital priorities.
Day-to-day youll lead complex cross-functional projects including cloud migrations and platform modernisation while championing best practice indata pipelines data modelling documentation and ways of working. Youll also act as a key point of contact for senior stakeholders keeping everyone up to speed on progress risks and impact.
And youll do all this while nurturing a high-performing team culture built on trust inclusion and continuous learning.
About you
You know your way around data platforms like Microsoft Fabric Hadoop or Snowflake and youre comfortable leading teams using tools like Synapse and languages such as Python Java or Scala. With a strong grasp ofdata pipelines cloud platforms (AWS Azure or GCP) and governance frameworks you can make strategic calls with confidence.
Youve delivered major data engineering projects before and have the leadership experience to set a vision inspire a team and see it through. Stakeholder engagement resource planning and clear communication all come naturally to you. A degree in a relevant field and cloud/data certifications are a bonus but what really matters is your ability to get people processes and platforms working together.
