Job Description

JOB CLASS CODE: 7916

TITLE: VEHICLE MECHANIC I

CLASSIFICATION: VEHICLE MECHANIC I

JOB GOAL: Perform mechanical repair work including preventative maintenance on school buses trucks and other gas- and diesel-powered automotive equipment as assigned. Vehicle Mechanic I incumbents independently perform body repairs gas or diesel engine overhauls and repairs and repair and overhaul electrical systems and transmission overhauls.

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation/Transportation Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or GED Certificate and at least one year experience in general automotive repair.
  2. A valid Kentucky commercial drivers license or willingness to pursue with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Methods tools equipment and materials used in basic diagnosis repair and maintenance of motorized equipment.
  2. Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance.
  3. Proper lifting techniques.
  4. Health and safety regulations and procedures.
  5. Use of service manuals.

ABILITY TO:

  1. Perform mechanical repair work including preventative maintenance on school buses trucks and other gas- and diesel-powered automotive equipment as assigned.
  2. Diagnose and repair basic mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects.
  3. Operate shop equipment and tools including electronic testing equipment and welders.
  4. Read and use mechanical diagrams repair manuals and parts catalogues.
  5. Maintain routine records.
  6. Plan and organize work.
  7. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  8. Work cooperatively with others.
  9. Lift heavy objects.
  10. Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform basic mechanical repair work on school buses and other gas or diesel-powered automotive equipment; assure buses conform with established standards for passenger vehicles; complete related maintenance records.
  2. Inspect mechanical defects in school buses trucks automobiles vans tractors electric carts and other mechanical equipment as assigned; drive and test school buses and provide emergency road service to disabled District school buses and vehicles as required.
  3. Disassemble motors and repair adjust and replace parts; recondition and adjust ignition and carburetor systems; repair fit and adjust valves pistons rings and bearings; clean repair and replace carburetors fuel pumps fuel lines gauges and electrical wiring systems.
  4. Repair mechanical defects in a variety of vehicles.
  5. Repair and replace alternators generators starters voltage regulators distributors and lighting systems; install a variety of parts including batteries brakes glass and door handles.
  6. Grind valves and perform welding; rebuild equipment as needed.
  7. Repair and replace heating and ventilation systems on District Vehicles; repair and maintain exhaust and fuel systems.
  8. Operate a variety of equipment and machinery including electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment scopes tire changers grinders lathes emissions analyzer steam cleaner hoists jacks torches and welding equipment and a variety of power and hand tools.
  9. Respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs as needed.
  10. Perform lubrication oil changes battery maintenance tire changes and servicing of equipment.
  11. Assist in starting buses as needed; assist other mechanics as directed; assist in inventory maintenance as required.
  12. Complete work orders and maintain records of time worked and materials used; recommend purchase of needed parts supplies and tools.
  13. Fill in as substitute bus driver as needed.
  14. Maintain work area equipment and tools in a safe clean and orderly condition.
  15. Perform related duties as assigned.
  16. Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies as set forth by the Owensboro Board of Education KRS and KAR and applicable Federal laws and regulations.
  17. Demonstrate loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Owensboro Public Schools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor and outdoor some environmentally physical activity. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions. School environment including but not limited to telephones personal interruptions background noises and children. Will require working with or near the public parents and with children and will be subject to sounds scents and other related environmental factors.

  2. Must be able to kneel squat and sit on the floor for long periods of time.
  3. Must be able to bend at the waist twist and turn
  4. Standing and walking intermittently throughout a typical work day
  5. Lifting up to and over 50lbs.

Bending pushing and moving throughout the day.
