Job Description

Position Information

Committed to Clean Chemistry for a Safer Environment.

The Department of Environmental Services (ENV) Environmental Quality Division is seeking two (2) Sanitary Chemists for their Water Quality Laboratory (the laboratory is currently located in Honolulu Sand Island but will be moving to Ewa later this year).

The Sanitary Chemist I positions:
  • Are entry-level positions in the field of chemistry and biological sciences with opportunity for progression in the Sanitary Chemist career ladder with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills.
  • Will be trained to do field and laboratory work under the supervision of higher level Sanitary Chemists.
  • Perform work in accordance with supervisory directives and established guidelines/procedures adhering to applicable safety practices rules and procedures and performs all duties in a safe and acceptable manner to ensure the safety of self co-workers and the general public.
  • Upon successful completion of training may perform fieldwork and other non-analytical assignments independently.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the role.

Special Work Requirements:
  • Required to work modified 5 days/week schedule to cover required weekend sampling and analysis and some overtime after hours and on holidays based on operational needs.
  • Required to gather samples and transport them directly to an appropriate site for testing and analysis in a timely manner as samples will degrade quickly.
  • Will need to travel to various less accessible sites for fieldwork assignments which requires driving.
  • Special hazards or physical hardships include: cuts falls toxic and noxious gases solvent vapors burns infections and water borne diseases.
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work inchemistry or a biological science.

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United order to receive credit for the education proper documentation e.g. a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided.
