Description

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple Refuse Truck Operators positions within the Solid Waste Division.This position is responsible for operating and maintaining City waste collection trucks and equipment as well as operating complex and heavy motor equipment machinery and vehicles in the collection of refuse and yard waste. Candidates selected for this position will serve as a lead worker by overseeing and training an assigned crew of Refuse Collectors.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Operating specialized equipment and vehicles such as waste collection rear loaders yard waste container vehicles and knuckle arm boom trucks. Following assigned route to collect trash and debris. Loading transporting and delivering refuse. Operating snow removal equipment as needed;
  • Maintaining equipment and keeping vehicle in good working order. Fueling washing and sweeping out vehicle. Following established protocols and procedures for safe operation. Performing pre- and post-run inspections and reporting damaged or unsafe equipment to supervisor. Scheduling mechanical maintenance;
  • Serving as lead to an assigned crew maintaining safety standards for the crew and assisting in training new employees. Processing routine documents and forms;
  • Establishing safe work zones by erecting barricades and signs and directing traffic as needed. Assisting citizens as needed and responding to their questions and concerns.
**This position is considered Essential which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather**
This individual may be required to work nights weekends holidays or on-call as needed.

Qualifications Special Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of experience operating a waste collection vehicle or two years of experience driving heavy vehicle equipment such as an eighteen-wheeler delivery truck or school bus
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING CERTIFICATIONS and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record. Must be obtained prior to hire date.
  • Requires a Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record. Must be obtained prior to hire date.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk hear see and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb balance kneel crouch reach stand walk push pull lift; and occasionally stoop crawl finger grasp and feel. The working conditions may include environmental terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties this classification is considered to be heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
