Description

Bellingham Technical College is recruiting for a temporary Retail/Bookstore Clerk I for the Campus Store for the 2025-26 academic year through June 30 2026. This is a part-time temporary hourly assignment that follows the academic calendar with quarterly breaks and is scheduled to begin in September 2025. This position reports to the Campus Store Manager.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

Retail/Bookstore Clerk 1

  • Assist retail store customers and sell a wide variety of merchandise; serve as cashier; retrieve and answer telephone calls and voicemail and/or forward to appropriate staff.
  • Follow verbal and written directions accurately.
  • Process and manage financial aid on account sales charge and cash transactions.
  • Monitor the stores general email box and answer inquiries.
  • May assist in processing and shipping web orders.
  • May open or close the store and register(s) daily verifying cash drawers.
  • May prepare bank deposits and complete daily financial record keeping.
  • May receive merchandise check price and stock retail goods and supplies.
  • Participate in physical inventories maintain inventory records.
  • Coordinate returns to publishers and/or suppliers; buy back books from students re-price and shelve materials.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Retail/Bookstore Clerk 1

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED certificateOR six months of experience in retail selling cash register operation and/or general clerical work or equivalent education/ experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
One or more years of retail sales/check-stand operator experience; experience handling cash check and credit card transactions. Advanced knowledge of computers and point-of-sale systems retail/office equipment and software applications (prefer MS Office suite).

Physical Work Environment:
This position may perform in multiple settings; primarily in a retail/office setting and will operate standard retail/office equipment such as a point-of-sale system handheld devices personal computer printer calculator cameras. The ability to work under pressure meet deadlines and accommodate interruptions while performing multiple tasks is essential; requires manual dexterity and mobility. This position requires moving items weighing up to 50 pounds and standing or walking for extended periods of time. Stooping bending twisting and lifting is essential; Finger manipulation typing grasping repetitive motion.

Supplemental Information

Compensation and Work Schedule:
Current pay rate is $21.04 per hour. Additional benefits include some paid sick leave in accordance with Washington State law and Initiative I-1433. Sick leave is accrued at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) a free counseling & referral program. Potential flexible schedule; No additional benefits.

This position works on campus in the BTC Campus Store. Work is generally 12 to 16 hours per week during store hours: 7:15am to 3:30pm Monday through Thursday and 7:15am to 1:30pm on Friday. Additional hours may be available at quarter starts. Work schedules will vary and hours are not guaranteed. These positions will follow the academic schedule with quarterly breaks. Temporary positions are not to exceed 1050 hours in the fiscal year July through June of each year and hours are not guaranteed.
