Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC) is seeking applications for a Research Assistant II. The CTSRC is part of the Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) which is comprised of three research centers: the Technical Assistance and Training Center the Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory and CTSRC. The Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) was established at the University of Connecticut in 1974 and operates within the College of Engineering. CTIs mission is to conduct integrated multidisciplinary research education and related services that promote safety and efficiency in multi-modal passenger and freight transportation systems and in turn enhance livable communities sustainable economies and the environment. CTI brings together a critical mass of transportation faculty and research talent at the University of Connecticut the top public research institution in New England.

CTSRC seeks a creative and detail-oriented Graphic Designer & Communications Specialist to support the development and implementation of a new electronic crash reporting system for the State of Connecticut. This position will play a critical role in designing user manuals crash investigator guides training materials public-facing communications and digital outreach tools to ensure successful adoption and use of the new platform by law enforcement transportation agencies and the public.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a statewide safety initiative with a broad public impact.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and produce professional-quality user manuals quick-reference guides crash investigator handbooks and other instructional materials.
  • Develop graphics templates and layouts for training presentations digital publications and print collateral.
  • Collaborate with crash data analysts trainers law enforcement liaisons and software developers to translate technical concepts into accessible visual materials.
  • Create social media graphics infographics and promotional content to communicate key messages about the new crash system to diverse stakeholders.
  • Ensure consistency in visual identity and brand across all materials and platforms.
  • Assist with copy editing layout and formatting of documents to ensure clarity accuracy and usability.
  • Support virtual and in-person training events with branded materials presentations and handouts.
  • Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. or B.S. and two to three years of post-degree experience or an M.A. or M.S. with zero to one year of post-degree experience in Graphic Design Communications Visual Media or a related field.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to convey complex information in a clear and user-friendly format (submitted products will be used as the basis of this evaluation).
  • Proven communication and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience designing materials for government transportation public safety or training environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design technical writing or human-centered design principles.
  • Certification of courses completed or ability to demonstrate content creation in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign Illustrator Photoshop) or a similar creative suite and Microsoft products.
  • Experience creating accessible and ADA-compliant documents.
  • Proven knowledge of video editing or e-learning authoring tools.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This position is a full-time 12-month appointment. The position may be annually renewable based on performance budget and needs of the department and college. The University offers a competitive salary outstanding benefits including spouse and dependent tuition waivers at UConn and a highly desirable work environment. The hiring range for this position is $60000 to $65000. Other rights terms and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the AAUP union.
