Job Description

Summary:The overall mission of Student Life is to create transformative experiences beyond the classroom that empower students to shape our campus and become engaged global citizens. The Associate Dean of Students supports this mission through oversight of the residence life and housing area but also through strategic planning student support and assessment for the division. This full-time 12-month benefits-eligible position serves on the senior leadership team within the Division of Student Affairs and reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students.

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesinclude:

  • Provide leadership to the Department of Residence Life including overseeing the budget developing a strategic plan and assessment. Providing leadership and oversight of team members responsible for RA training and development residential curriculum housing selection & assignments and building operations.
  • Provide strategic guidance on the housing process and bed utilization to maximize revenue generation for the university. Provide oversight into housing occupancy and capacity to ensure clear communication with the finance office and other campus leadership.
  • In collaboration with other departments the residence halls are safe clean and of the highest quality possible for a positive student experience. Work with our facilities team to address major facility/maintenance concerns.
  • Oversee all communications to residents to ensure information is shared appropriately and communication is clear.
  • Develop implement and evaluate policies and procedures for housing.
  • Assist with planning of new residence hall(s) or renovation of existing residence hall(s).
  • Navigate student and parent/family concerns and complaints related to residence life and housing.
  • Supervise the Residence Life team (Associate Director and Assistant Directors) as appropriate. Oversee training and development of professional staff and graduate assistants to ensure all residential staff are prepared to respond to situations as needed. Provides appropriateleadership feedback and supervision to personnel.
  • Provide level 2 responses to crisis situations for student concerns. Respond to live-in staff with after-hours concerns and contact with parents as needed.
  • Serve as part of the CARE/Behavioral Assessment Team and Student Support Team. Ensure that appropriate outreach is taking place by Residence Life team and provide updates to the CARE team as needed about students of concern.
  • Serve as part of the Emergency Operations Team to provide guidance to the team and support residential students during emergency situations.
  • Maintain network with peers in other institutions to stay current with trends and new opportunities.
  • Provides leadership for the Student Life Division in the absence of the Vice President for Student Engagement/Dean of Students
  • Provide leadership of the Family & Friends monthly newsletter and annual weekend visit coordinating schedules registrations and ordering materials as needed.
  • Working closely with the Director of Institutional Effectiveness leads the assessment/evaluation processes for the Student Life division including taking lead on initiatives required by the accreditation process aligning the divisions plans with the assessment and strategic priorities for the University
  • Consistently serves as an advocate for diversity and cross-cultural understanding to create a welcoming campus to all students
  • Supports the VPSA in coordinating division meetings retreats training and other professional development opportunities for the division.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and university needs
  • Assist students and guests who visit the office
  • Represent the Division and/or Department of Residence Life and Housing on various campus-wide committees and admissions functions as assigned.

Experience Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Masters degree in Student Affairs Administration or comparable degree program with at least five years professional experience with evidence of progressively more responsible roles. Related combination of education and/or experience considered.
  • Proven success at developing implementing and evaluating Residence Life programs that foster student learning and development
  • Staff supervisory experience including staff selection onboarding training feedback performance management performance counseling teambuilding for optimum performance
  • Crisis management experience including working with or supporting students who have mental and emotional health challenges required
  • Experience with carefully and reasonably accommodating students with disabilities in the residence hall setting
  • Ability to quickly build warm collaborative working relationships with faculty staff and students that inspire professional trust
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to create strategic processes and policies that align with division and University priorities
  • Proficient at multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to discern when to independently solve problems or to elevate to a higher level or different department
  • Capacity to recognize patterns and provide reasonable foresight when planning or problems arise
  • Skilled in autonomous decision-making with transparency in decision-making and management
  • Understanding of programmatic assessment and evaluation
  • Ability to keep sensitive information confidential; familiarity with FERPA
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a team
  • Skilled at holding others accountable while also affirming their humanity
  • Skilled at being flexible and adept to change
  • Experience in serving on search committees and hiring employees preferred
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience managing budgets preferred
  • Experience working with accreditation processes a plus
