Description of Work

This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporaries are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.


Individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified for the job. OSHR supports the Governors Job Ready initiative and seeks to expand a temporarys skill set to enhance their qualifications for State government and private sector jobs. Exposure to an agencys culture process procedures and potential learning opportunities can provide valuable experience to those who may seek permanent employment with the state.

This temporary position is located in Raleigh - Wake County.


Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $24.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).


This temporary position will be assigned to the Department of State Treasurer. This position is located at 3200 Atlantic Ave Raleigh NC 27604.

The duties of this position include:
  • Processes retirement applications.
  • Reviews required retirement documentation to verify accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Contacts employers to verify and resolve reporting discrepancies.
  • Processes Service and/or Unpaid Contribution purchase calculations upon request from the member and/or Employer.
  • Discusses Service and Unpaid Contribution purchases and options with Pension Fund and Retirement System members.
  • Logs member death information in system when reported and acquires necessary documentation as required to process beneficiary payments.
  • Processes death claims for all active and retired Specialty Plan members.and determines member eligibility for disability benefits.
  • Discusses any discrepancies in payroll and date of disability with member and employer.
  • Reviews required disability forms for accuracy and completeness to submit to the Medical Board for decision.
  • Process correspondence to notify members/employers of the Medical Board results within 24 hours of decision.
  • Performs service audits by reviewing member history and employer reports to determine months of creditable service researching gaps in employment history and analyzing service related to disability requests.
  • Verifies information with employer on employment dates employment gaps length of service and any other member employment history.
  • Processes Refund of Contributions upon request of the Specialty Plan member.
  • Reviews divorce agreements for equitable distributions.
  • Processes transfers at the request of the employer or member when transferring between Fire/Rescue departments or Retirement System accounts.
  • Posts/reconciles monies and information reported on the Turn-around documents (TADs) from each of the 1675 departments who are members of the Fire/Rescue Pension Fund with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Resolves member/employer inquires that require researching rosters and other documents in our files.
  • Provides telephone coverage for the Specialty Plan Call Center line.
  • Responds timely to the Fire/Rescue Email Box dedicated to Fire/Rescue member population.
  • Responds timely to incoming Specialty Plan correspondence received from members/employers.
  • Prepares training materials in the form of PowerPoints and handouts for offsite presentations for Specialty Plan members.
  • Delivers training to Specialty Plan members upon request for employers and other organizations.
  • Conducts one-on-one telephone meetings with Specialty Plan members and employers upon their requests.
  • Counsels members regarding information about their retirement to get the most benefits in retirement on the phone and in person.
  • Responds to Employer requests for written information confirmation of the quarterly Earnable Allowance for the retired Judges returning as Emergency Judges.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
