Job Summary: The Coding Specialist I is responsible for reviewing coding and abstracting inpatient and/or outpatient medical records.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED with two years coding experience relevant to the position as follows:
Formal coding education preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Must have CPC CCS or CCS-P. May have a CCA with 5 years of relevant experience.
Primary Source Verification (if applicable):
Knowledge/Skills: Requires working knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT4 coding and guidelines and principles. Requires knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology preferred. Computer experience helpful. Requires the ability to work independently and as a team member. Requires ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Requires the ability to effectively communicate with clientele and other personnel especially physicians
Other: Employees located in Physician Billing and Collections departments (0and 10-6954) are required to work a minimum of one weekend a month along with occasional holiday work. Overtime will vary with workload and employee must be available for overtime according to business needs.
Contacts: Contact coders other hospital personnel in particular finance and business office staff case managers performance improvement staff nurses and physicians and clinical documentation specialists.
Work Demands/Environment: Requires sitting visually examining documents and viewing a computer screen for long periods of time. Requires finger dexterity eye-hand coordination corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires walking standing lifting bending pushing pulling stretching. Requires working under stressful conditions at times. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. Required to review understand and abide by our Code of Conduct and the related policies and procedures contained in the CAHS Compliance Manual. Will attend annual compliance education programs as part of mandatory training. Required to report violations of policy law regulations of Our Code of Conduct: The Right Thing to Do to the Compliance Officer. Failure to comply with or failure to detect and report violations will result in discipline up to and including immediate discharge. Required reporting to supervisor of any conviction of violating the law
