The Everyday Essentials team is looking for an economist experienced in causal inference empirical industrial organization and working with large scale data to to solve complex problems in the space of selection management. This position will develop economic frameworks for assigning products into different customer consideration sets using demand estimation techniques and develop scalable frameworks for integrating these recommendations with other systems at Amazon.
These initiatives will enhance how Amazon fulfills its customers needs creating a more efficient shopping experience for customers and lower operational costs for Amazon. The initiatives will improve Amazons retail operations by reducing the cost of delivering to customers and providing them with relevant purchase options using the right fulfillment channel. The Economist will determine which products benefit most from being offered through different fulfillment channels by analyzing customer preferences and supply chain conditions.
Key job responsibilities *Develop an economic framework for selecting products into customer consideration sets. Utilizing demand estimation internalizing spillovers (e.g. menu effects) and incorporating long term effects on customer beliefs. * Design A/B tests and conduct statistical analysis on their results * Work with distributed machine learning and statistical algorithms to harness enormous volumes of data at scale to serve our customers * Present and publish science research contributing to Amazons science community * Mentor junior engineers and scientists * Work closely with internal stakeholders including business teams engineering teams and partner teams to align them with your focus area
About the team Our team is highly cross-functional and employs a wide array of scientific tools and techniques to solve key challenges including supervised and unsupervised machine learning non-convex optimization causal inference natural language processing linear programming reinforcement learning and other forecast algorithms. Some critical research areas in our space include modeling substitutability between similar products incorporating basket awareness and complementarity-aware logic measuring speed sensitivity of products modeling network capacity constraints and supply and demand forecasting.
- PhD in economics or equivalent - Experience in industry consulting government or academic research - Experience in structural econometrics or customer choice modeling
- Experience in developing and executing an analytic vision to solve business-relevant problems - Knowledge of Python or R
